‘Gambia has respect for human rights’

Gomez1By JollofNews Correspondent
Gambia has respect for the protection and promotion of human rights, said Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Edward Gomez.
Addressing the opening of the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, Minister Gomez rebuffed constant reports of human rights violations in Gambia, saying that the country fully respects human rights and democracy. He said the Gambian constitution provides for theGomez1 guarantee of fundamental human rights of the citizenry.
“There is no country that does not have a provision in its constitution defending human rights,” Gomez said.
“Any decent society must uphold democracy and good governance, human rights and rule of law which are a pre-requisite for any development,” he added.
According to the Justice Minister, human rights may be subjected to different views but they are all fundamental.
He defended the controversial move of the government to reintroduce the death penalty by pointing to the existence of the form of punishment in “the most powerful countries in the world,” such as “the United States, Indonesia, Singapore and China.”
He said the Gambia’s case is justifiably in that it targets people dealing in hard drugs and heinous crimes.
“We as a small country with 1.8 million cannot allow people with drugs to make this country a safe haven,” he said.
“We have the duty to protect our citizens and ensure democracy and good governance. Without good governance and democracy, law and order will surely fail,” Gomez said, while stressing his government’s stance in its effort to undoing drug dealers, whom he said have been infiltrating the country from drug infested nations like Guinea Bissau, Colombia, etc.

To put it simply....

The route taken...was the "majority" of citizens against the "minority" and over priviledged ruling class.

To consider...making a commoner a King

Is surely...against the revolution that would make a King a commoner ?

"equals amongst men"

Food for thought ?

Taking a "slant" on the meaning of the words of Prof. A.Saine.

This form of moniarchial/dictatorial government by stealth...is becoming an "endangered species" in the World.

Words such as Democracy, Human Rights,
Freedom of Speach and Expression...are the page headers...under which the explaning substance of these headings must be understood and followed.. vigourously.

It is one thing to have a sign on the door.. saying...Human Rights.

..and something completley different to find a man with a gun showing you to its "reception".
Broadly based "revolutions" of history....were inspired by the people for the people.

They were basically a "social battlecry"

...for parity and equal rights and opportunities for the citizen....against the hereditary ruling classes.

The Gambia...cannot quantify its "revolution"...without upholding fundamental "social responsibility".

Guys none must take this shameless hypocrite seriously. He will support, advocate for & defend EVERYTHING yaya stands for; including the abusive prostitution of his own daughter-Zara Gomez only to be dumped for another related friend-Allimah Sallah. This explains what type this man is; how desperate he’s to keep his job & how low he’s prepared to stoop to please yaya, his stupid-idol. Was drug baron General Bubo not lodged & given vehicle & state protection by yaya jammeh? Was yaya not sanctioning Ensa Badjie to sell drugs for him?? From horse’s mouth on his interview on Freedom radio, has Sillaba Samateh not implied that he was told by yaya through NIA to lie in evidence in court in the case??? Yaya & co terrorist like Edu Gomez will sure get their days. Truth will eventually prevail.

We have reached a point where people forfiet their selfesteem for world accomplishments . Even as he uttered those words, Edu himself knew the man he was defending knew he was lying, which explains why they do not stay long.
Hey, the truth is the truth; nothing replaces it... It will just be a matter of time!

Is it not laughable that the more vigorously they (Justice Ministers) defend this failed system in Banjul, the sooner they they fired? Remember Marie Saine Firdaus in Geneva?

All these Human Rights conferences are making them very uncomfortable plus the fact that there are security officials locked up in Mile 2 who are giving Jammeh sleepless nights and he is looking for a legal way to dispose of them. After all he can always claim that they were sentenced to death anyway and it is just the law that is taking it's course. Good job Edu, i hope you are proud of yourself.
