What next, after reaching Libya 2011?
Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:21
Gamsports - Here we go again. The youth team’s arrival at the African summit over the weekend marks another milestone in the ever mounting
growth in the future of Gambian football. More than ever before, we have proved to the world that our achievement in youth football in the past few years is no fluke, but fruits from genuine work and hard thought that has been the hallmark of the GFA’s programme in revolutionalising the
bases of out football. But perhaps more importantly the team’s match to the throne must also reassure and bring back confidence of the public to the good work our FA has been doing towards achieving solid and tangible success in our football.
This is more relevant because if the recent noise from the G FA is anything to go by, the body is struggling financially, which is threatening the smooth running of its programmes and by extension jeopardizing outcomes on the pitch. As I write, the GFA is indebted to players in bonuses, air- fare refunds for players, not to talk about mounting utility bills and eye- sore overdrawn bank statements.
.To survive this nightmare and push on with the next very important assignment, the national team, the GFA would need a massive lending of hand in raising much needed funds.
These efforts must be led by government, who is the key and perhaps only important mover in fund raising drives in the country these days. This is not to belittle the efforts already made through the Fund raising committee, but there is still more arsenal in the government’s amoury to help replenish GFA accounts directly or indirectly through stimulating and persuading the private sector to cash in, as it does in other national matters .
As we celebrate this hour of triumph we must not rest until it is crown with the qualification to the CAN 2012 by the Scorpions next year. This is the ultimate path to full recognition as a soccer power.
The road to this path too, even at this half way stage, is not impassable, if work on and off the pitch are combined and used to the best of abilities in the two matches remaining.
To round off what is certainly is another crown on our feathers, we at Gamsports extend our gratitude and congratulations to all Gambians, officials, players, coaches and members of the public.
PS, my friend Ebrima Manneh only recently reminded me about a no less important affair in Tunisia next month, as he and his colleagues in charge of the Under- 17 seek to march on to defend that Millon Dollar coveted trophy the team won in Algeria last year. Indeed, boy, you would get there, if not for anything but the prospect of another cash windfall. Hahahaha.
