What a dishonorable picture!
Tuesday, 11 May 2010 08:23
By Kemo ChamAs a former editor of the Daily Observer (of course nothing much to be proud of given especially this particular discourse), I have a fair idea of just how popular the paper is among certain quarter of government officials – not that they appreciate it as a source of news on happenings around; far from it. They like it because it is a perfect medium to selling one’s self to Yahya Jammeh for hiring.

If anyone didn’t believe this it was because they had no idea how important Yahya Jammeh viewed the paper.
Interestingly, this very Daily Observer has served as a medium for image wrecking for almost all these people who used it to climb the rather unenviable ladder.
Ex-IGP Ensa Badjie’s present portrayal is a perfect illustration of this.
For many non-admirers of Yahya Jammeh’s government it simply explains what those intransigent supporters of the president would never hear – his penchant for letting his cronies down. Well, needless to say that only one man benefits from the spectacle that is made out of formerly influential people in society and that is Yahya Jammeh. No one else does.
Whether he does it to prove genuine points or not, the pictures are unacceptably humiliating. The actual fact is that these images form part of a stockpile of ammunition waiting to explode on the face of our society. Therefore, you do not expect any serious minded leader to succumb to their weakness and descend so low.
While it is understandable that Yahya Jammeh has a point to prove to Gambians and the rest of the world by trying his close allies who are believed to be wanting for one thing or the other, dramatizing their plight does not only devalue his efforts, it also makes mockery of him and all that he claims to stand for. But most importantly, it sets us, as a nation, on an unpleasant path.
It is just a matter of time before the rest of us realize that some of the unnecessary exhibitions that happen in Banjul are of no good, that they are in fact dangerous. With the trend of things, it is beyond palpability that every one who serves under Yahya Jammeh awaits similar fate. And this reality could well be the pinnacle of conditions conducive for drastic decisions.
As a relative of these people subjected to this degrading spectacle, how would you feel? What do you expect people like Jesus to do with the slighted opportunity to unseat Jammeh?
Yahya must be made to see wisdom and start running the country like a normal leader would.
