We Cannot Change the World by Keeping Quiet
Tuesday, 26 July 2011 23:11
- GCAP Ambassador Adelaide Sosseh speaks out against the repression of human rights activists in The Gambia and
Malawi My daughter Ndey Tapha former President of the GPU was charged with treason on Tuesday the 19th July 2011. She has been charged with "conspiiring with others to overthrow the legally elected government of The Gambia by unlawful means" along with other members of the Coalition for Change The Gambia.
As an activist and mother, it has certainly been distressing for me to see Ndey at the centre of attention in the media under circumstances that are less than
favorable. Tuesday's incident was unexpected but I had seen it coming for some time. In accepting the position of Secretary General for the Coalition for Change - The Gambia, Ndey had put herself in a very vulnerable position taking the unsure political situation in country. This is something however, that must be done. If we all keep quiet then when will the status quo change? If we all turn our eyes away then who will inform the world of the huge atrocities that are going on in The Gambia? If charging Ndey with treason, sedition and other crimes is the price that we and my family have to pay; if she lost her position as President of the GPU due to the maligning of her integrity and tarnishing of her reputation then so be it. It is the sacrifice that we have to make to let the world know and to cry to our Lord and Maker, that all is not well in The Gambia. I believe that it will all end one day. When, where and how only Allah the Almighty knows. However, burying our heads in the soil is not the solution. The solution is to talk and advocate against the untenable situation. It is extremely dangerous but we will prevail. Current world trends speak volumes.
Ndey is still in self exile in Mali. She was charged in absentia. They can pass whatever judgement they want in their Kangaroo Courts. It really does not move me. I stand firm in my resolve and know that truth and justice will prevail. This is also the moment for all of us - the global human rights community - to extend our solidarity to civil society in Malawi. We feel their pain and we are with them during these difficult times. Africa will surely be liberated. The sadness is the cost in human lives.

Oustass Alhaji Ismaila Manjang’s been battling in & out of the tyrants grips & captivity, one of them just recent, for his firm stance, pronouncements, & yet denouncements, of the ungodly executions of state matters & general affairs for peoples wellbeing; there are many like them in struggle to salvage Gambia with us all.
Mrs/Aunty Adelaide’s ever been an activist; she only can come this far when the ‘hot rod’s been toasted into her very own eyes’; but not too late to add onto the majority of silent sufferings we all know our families been subjected to since July 1994, & continues unabated; until we concentrate on the Tyrant as our ONLY prime target.
“...they first took fellow villager, nobody complained, then they came for my neighbour, I didn’t complain, when they came for me, there was no one left to complain...” This is the need why ALL Gambians, friends & international development partners got to get our priorities right & boot yaya out soonest, before it’s too late.
Mr Saul whilst we stand to disagree to agree in our collective quest for remedy to oust dictatorship & salvage sanity back in Gambia I would suggest we refrain from blame game/s. I for one know of Gunjurians here in this media & other places, like Dr. Janneh & anybodyelse, struggling with you from onset to redress the carnage that befell Gambia since AF/PRC conspirators forcefully took the helm of state of affairs; Guntur too, got some fallible civil-unaware compatriots who like many communities in Gambia, succumb to the tyrant’s dictates, MOSTLY, under coercion. Certainly you already acknowledged the land wasn’t willing given but confiscated.
