UN mission in Ivory Coast evacuates to Gambia
Tuesday, 07 December 2010 00:27
Amid uncertainty surrounding the political impasse in Ivory Coast, the United Nations in the country has just announced it is evacuating its nonessential staff into Gambia.
The U.N. said the temporarily move is being taken in response to the volatile security situation in the country, and that it is not in any way a result of a demand by the Ivorian
authorities. The Gbagbo government, which has been angered by the UN’s endorsement of rival presidential candidate Alassane Ouattara, had threatened to expel the UN’s representative in the country.
According to Martin Nesirky, a spokesperson of the UN, 460 of its staff in Ivory Coast, comprising civilians, would be temporarily relocated to Gambia, from where they would do their work, the UN said.
The peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast "will continue to carry out its core mandated tasks," he said.
"In the light of the current security situation, a decision was taken on the ground to relocate non-essential staff on a temporary basis," Nick Birnback, a spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping department, added.
