UK Minister for Africa calls on Gambia to fulfill rights obligation

Hendry_BillinghaJollofNews- The campaign for human rights in Gambia appears to be reaching its intended target, even if gestures from the Gambian government tend to suggest otherwise.
International pressure is actually being put on President Yahya Jammeh’s government, as has been indicated by UK’s Minister for Africa, Henry Bellingham, who promised that the coalition government in UK will nonetheless continue to raise concerns about freedom of expression and other human rights and good governance issues in the Gambia through the European union and internationally.
"The Gambia has signed all major United Nations human rights conventions and we expect the Gambia to fulfill these obligations," Bellingham said.
Responding to a question recently from Labour MP for Glasgow North and shadow minister William Baine, who asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commomwealth Affairs what recent report he had received on the human rights situation and freedom of the press in the Gambia, the UK Minister said: "our high commission in Banjul regularly raises human rights concerns with the government of the Gambia both bilaterally and also in its capacity as permanent local residency of the European Union.”
“Most recently,” he added, “the minister for Africa raised concerns with the Gambian minister of Foreign Affairs on September 14 2010 in London."
According to the Minister, the UK government has set out its position clearly at the EU/Gambia article 8 consultations held in June last year, in Banjul, as well as during the Gambia’s Universal Periodic Review sessions in UN in February the same year.

Cont: No the load on him is how to get the economy back on track not rularizing China's human right record. So is building confidence for his political interest. People need jobs and as long as developments and jobs are created people carelss whose right is abused. This applys to every country whether you agree with me or not and this is what you seeing happen in the Gambia despite you call it quote "SO CALLED DEVELOPMENTS AND PROJECTS". My motive of commenting is always let the hypocrits leave our problem for us. "GAMBIAN PROBLEM IS A GAMBIAN SOLUTION NOT A FOREGIN SOLUTION".

Badara
My honorable man please try to understand me. When I comment I dont comment trying to justify the injustice in the Gambia or defend Jammeh. But what I always justify is hypocrits have no room to tell us how we should behave or run our country when they are worst. My comments are always to emphaize my slogan of " GAMBIAN PROBLEM IS A GAMBIA SOLUTION NOT TO BE DICTATED BE AN OUTSIDE FORCE WHO WE SEE CONTINUE TO HOLD RESPONSIBLE OF ALL THE HUMAN ACTROCITIES IN THE WORLD" When we even say the west is only few countries above the law, that is America, UK, France and Germany. The worst are the UK and America. With these countries still existing the world peace is far from peace. China's president is here in the US. Is the discussion about Human right? No but boosting trade to create more job opportinutes and development. Would he annoy China by probing or debating more on human right abuse? .

3..Well, China is learning the western “secrets” (YOU don’t need .. not ‘WE’ please as U always write) in order to have its own brands to capture and compete out your impoverish Gambia and Africa economy, while you spend your life talking about Obama’s banquet, Guantamo, Buma, commonwealth.?. China buying US jets, can U not see that cash have africa blood in it? e.g Darfur,Congo etc. For you information, my dad, went to Burma too with W/African frontier force, the bulk from English W/African neighbours. You never heard them brag about it in England despite they are more in numbers thank you or me. Not to talk about the millions of Asians who fought not in Buma but heart of Europe or millions Arabs in North Africa. They need visa too just like Canadians, Aussies and all except EU and the other way round. Maybe you should call home office to be relief of anger. Self-pity is toxin and blinds people and bring them chronic poverty and ignorance.

2.. to this blatant abuse of a self-pity society of mine by the like of Jammeh, Gbagbo, and Amin, that’s your opinion. You’r literate with PC, can read, saw, taste the west live health care, wealth, liv ing standard and the freedom they created for their people..so you’r fine. If you want a war or have bad experiences, it is very unfair use impoverish Gambia nation or Africa to fight your anger or objectives. With the “west secrets of their wealth and freedom” I meant the ability to let your people be free to question their environment and bring innovation to improve their lives and create wealth and finally development, maybe, maybe if you are alive the back of a PC will read “MADE IN THE GAMBIA”. . About china, without the west china will be nothing. Look around you if you can find a Chinese own brand cars, white goods, cloths, electronics etc. The parent company with right and the profit is western outsourced to china.

Jankay..Africans and Gambians are extremely short sighted and have this self-pity which means the psychological state of their mind (which you showed here), is to perceived adverse situations and failed to accepted their situation since they don’t have the confidence or the ability to cope with it. This is characterized by their belief that they are the victim of events and therefore deserve condolence. E.g. A self-pitied person or a society like this is the one who spend all his life analysing about another society clothes, cars, food, and life, while he never own even wheelbarrow, have no cloths on and goes to bed every day hungry. Seeing someone come and used this self-pitied society to cement his power and create wealth for himself is what I find very wicked and that’s the sole reason I think Yayha Jammeh is destroying Gambia. If you think, I am an “opposition” or not sincere enough because of my reaction, find. Am just concern

Guys,

No wrong can make another wrong, right. And just because USA & Western Europe pursue their interests in some third world countries at the expense of human rights & the rule of law should not mean that they can't remind those leaders their obligations with regards to respect of their peoples' rights.

After all, these leaders in third world countries infringe the rights of their own citizens and thus hinder their own development aspirations.

USA & Western countries,by & large, respect their citizen's rights. And they are asking our leaders to do the same.

Moreover,USA & Western Europe did not become economic & military giants because they are super human or have contact with aliens.

They engaged in extensive & prolonged scientific research in various fields of human studies to be where they are today.

But this is not possible where praise singing rather than debate is the norm.

Cont.

When western governments meet the Chinese..they don't say we signed agreements on democracy and human rights.

They say we have signed agreements to supply planes and cars etc.

Russian commonism was not defeated by Democracy and human rights...it was defeated by the Russians trying for 3 decades to match western military might.

The Chinese said yesterday...we will not engage in military domination....

I think the Chinese have learned by Russian's mistake?

You are almost getting there.

The Global realignment, that lead to the banking crash...was and is being paid for by ordinary people...not big business or there shareholders.Sure there were some casualties like Lehman Bros. But western governments used tax payers money to protect the banks and the big International money lenders..which indirectly service these multi national corporations.

When the British government say...we care about Africa's democracy...what they are really saying is...this is the foundation upon which..we can continue to control the the free passage of western global economic interest.

Mr Wally is spot on when he refers to American/China partnerships...and the conflict of interests which are emerging rapidly on the frontiers of Africa.

National govermental interests are just a front for big business.

Africa needs a united front or its interests will evaporate under such international economic pressure.

Mr Lalo Kebbaba
Thank God, you are around too, but do open the door of Africa to those who meant and wish well for mother africa. Trust me they are there and rampant and can make a big difference to solve our lacking behind, ofcourse under your watch and your service for mother for Africa.

Comment:
Well, Badara, you're right there they are right there in mother Africa but the question is they are there for who?
Is it not still for their selfish interest: France in Ivory Coast, China in Sudan and Namibia, Again France in Gabon, and America in the D.R.Congo, What of the English coming to Rwanda, and we can now seeing the Irains and Turkeys are warming up for mother Africa So we have no option but to challenge those who don't want us to dance our own tune and dress like we want.

In the service of mother Africa I remain

Badara

I think we all have to follow America in asking china d secret of their wealth generation.Barack Obama just had a lavish state banquet 4 d chinese president. They all trying d chinese to do business with them....china is buying jets from america creating 200k jobs....u see badara when it comes to weath generation in the west, freedom of speech and human rights go out of d window. Its only mentioned to leaders in e.g Zimbabwe not china b'cos its americas' banker as Hillary cliton said "how can u argue with ur banker"...america borrowed $1 trillion from china 2 date to finance illegal wars...hoping to get the rewards in d long term by having favourable oil deals but china ironically is having most of those deals at d moment in Afganistan ...this people r smart.....so i think Mr badara we all need to ask d chinese d secret like d Americans r doing right now...we need mutual n genuine partnership.

HE WHO DARES TO WIN WILL WIN, WE DARE, WE WILL WIN.
