UK Labour MP pledges support for Gambia human rights campaigners

Gambia_stop_the_rule_of_fearBy Yusupha Cham
The newly formed Scotland based Gambia campaign to fight Human Rights Violations has won the support of a British Member of Parliament.
Labour MP for Glasgow North East, Willie Bain, pledged his support recently, when he met members of the Campaign for Human Rights in the Gambia.Gambia_stop_the_rule_of_fear
Launched in Glasgow last September, Campaign for Human Rights in the Gambia seeks to keep the rest of the world aware of the deteriorating situation in Gambia.
Exiled Gambian political journalist, Alieu B. Ceesay, told the Labour MP that arbitrary arrests, detention and human rights violations in his homeland translate into a culture of silence. All public protests have ceased. Self censorship of the media is the rule rather than the exception.
“Individuals are rarely informed of the reason for their arrest. Once in custody, detainees seem to fall beyond the protection of the law. They are routinely subjected to further human rights violations, such as torture, unfair trials and execution or they simply disappear,” Ceesay said.
Amnesty International has published a report on human rights violations in Gambia. The current political climate in the country denies political parties a permit to hold rallies, access to radio or television air time in state media or to sell their programmes to local citizens. Femi Peters of the United Democratic Party was jailed for doing just that.
The Scottish led Campaign group has appealed to the UK government to exert economic and political pressure on the Gambian government with a view to protecting and respecting the human rights of the Gambian people and the international protocols and conventions which Gambia has signed.
The Westminster MP said he would speak to the Shadow Foreign Secretary about the situation and will also put forward written and oral questions to Parliament about the human rights situation in Gambia.
He called on the Campaign to reach out to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights, the influential International Development Select Committee, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Select Committee in order to get their message to more MPs.

I would like to take the opportunity to commend Alieu B Ceesay and his fellow human rights campaigners. It is great to see another organisation formed to highlight the human rights violations in our beloved homeland.I think it is important for our voices to be heard not only on forums like this, but also on the outside.
I would like to remind everyone to make the phone calls to the opposition leaders in The Gambia and urge them to come together for the 2011 election. We have got to be practical as well in our campaign.

Domou Sine Duragal,

Stop being a prejudice and get to know people before you start acting God Allmighty...you don't know me...you need to understand that such platforms are not meant for destructive competition but rather constructive dialogue.

Fundamentals of currency fluctuations are beyond your simplifications ....Global economies are intertwined...so economic policies of one nation do have an impact on others....Take for instance the trade inbalances between the US and China...Don't tell me China's policies have nothing to do with that.

By the way, please quote where i mentioned British policies being geared into the Gambia...I mentioned the IMF and Co though...and please don't tell me they don't dictate our policies because thats one of the many criteria to be an IMF member country...PEACE & BLESSINGS COMRADE.

soundboy.

We working class 60 year olds...had to learn the hard way.?

David Cameron is hell bent on putting us workng boys back on the treadmill again.

If It were left to me, I would burn Eton and Harrow and all those priviledged private rich peoples abatoirs down to the ground.

WE working class must show solidarity to our Gambian brothers.

Jammeh has betrayed his roots.

He must be overcome and sent packing.

@ soundboy
Cut your coat according to yo size. Try and understand Gambia ECONOMY in the global trade first and Link it with the theories below and that the key of knowledge. Simplified it for you; U can’t go to your local bank and buy Moroccan Dirham or Indian rupee etc. However, U can buy a pound, dollar, yen, euro, krona, etc. Banks are business N wont stuck a currency no one buys. Your economic performances globally trigger your currency demand and ability to buy it in a bank as evidence. I reply to postings because how you think British monetary and fiscal policies can be geared to Gambia is insane and unrealistic. I advise you to focus on Gambia to bring an environment for your factors U mentioned below and that will not happen under Yahya Jammeh if U really knows what U are on about, U know current state in Gambia is not where these facotrs will work. period. U chill and try to understand the roots of problems rather being a free thinker. advice to U

Domou Sine Duragal,

Don't forget that demand for any currency is triggered by many other fundamental factors such as;

monetary and fiscal policies, efficient and competitive markets, money supply, productivity and investments just to name a few.

Economics is a theoretical discipline that evolves overtime...so stop being Mr know all, chill all and let folks express their views.

By the way i'm not english....so excuse any of my writing defects in the future...too bad our native languages ain't official...none is perfect though.

I'm willing to learn...so educate me.

Quote "I hereby join you bro on the freedom train. Together we can establish a Gambia free of injustices from abroad and within"

I don’t know what you are on about since injustice is not from abroad rather within Gambia. You need to understand injustices and looking at abroad means turning back to your people held in captive and terror. If you know what is injustices, then U need not to look abroad to see that, rather look in Gambia. Or you are not soundboy in that environment? Just to make U more sound :it is the DEMAND of a nation currency that set D its currency in the global market. Learn more about global trade and you will be more sound in your economic analysis too. Quoting soundboy:
Abdurahman,
"Why would Gambia need Britain in the first place to get a good IMF deal or what ever?"
Exactly the point i'm emphasizing. Why take an oppressor to be our saviour? .....
Please don't be all squared and suppress opinions, this is, and should be a platform for open minded discussions...we all have Gambia's interest at heart..so please no limitations.
I hereby join you bro on the freedom train. Together we can establish a Gambia free of injustices from abroad and within.
Let our voices be heard by our representants in parliament...remind them of their commitments to serve our interest and hold them accountable for the choices they make...etc.
UNITED WE STAND.

NO, soundboy such dictators are not interested in that. Only their gabage is to be heard.

Its a negative and remote quality to be a prejudice....so let all voices be heard without any form of suppression whatsoever... Communication is a two way street.

I guess we can agree to disagree on how best we navigate our vessel (Gambia) safely through all sorts of storm....we are all in it. Lets nourish and cherish the common interests we share and do away with division, for a hospitable Gambia for all.

Thanking Jollof News for providing the means for dialogue between people of diverse origins.

All the best.
