UK government urged to exert international pressure on Gambia
Sunday, 05 December 2010 22:21

The campaign to secure Scottish parliamentary opposition to the systematic human rights abuses in The Gambia has been assisted by the Scottish based Campaign for Human Rights in The Gambia.
The sponsor of the parliamentary Motion, MSP for Glasgow and leader of the Scottish Green Party Patrick Harvie said: "I am glad to lend my support to the vital work of the Scottish Campaign for Human Rights in The Gambia. Twenty MSPs from the main political parties have now signed my parliamentary motion, which call on the parliament to condemn the reported catalogue of human rights taking place in the Gambia. It’s of huge importance that people of all nations are ready to stand up for human rights and show real solidarity with people suffering under repressive and violent regimes. The UK and Scottish Governments must do all they can to ensure that international pressure is put on the Gambia government in defense of human rights".
The EDM will be communicated to the Gambian High Commission in London, and it will hopefully add to pressure for the restoration of democracy, human rights and political freedom and for the Gambia government to respect International and Regional protocols the country has signed.
"We hope this parliamentary motion will send a strong signal to the Gambia government that a government that rule by fear. intimidation, torture and killing have no place in a democracy. The Gambian people deserve a media free from attacks from government through the Green Boys or Ninja Boys and state security apparatus and to live in a plural society with open debates and freedom of expression," said Alieu B Ceesay, Campaign Officer,(SCHRG).
The Campaigns next public meeting will be in Edingburgh on Thursay 16 December at the Peace and Justice Centre. It will coincide with the 5th anniversary of the callous assassination of Journalist Deyda Hyadara, whose murder the Gambia government has refused to conduct any serious investigation on.

The world is watching another third world country gradually slide into chaos and potential civil strife because of inept and corrupt leadership.
I think we should be grateful to those Gambians and friends of The Gambia who are tireless in their campaigns in raising the alarm.
