UK doctors warn against Malaria infection in Gambia

tp-malaria-pills-cp-4691261JollofNews - Infectious disease experts in UK have raised concern over dangers of malaria infection for travelers to Gambia, and warned websites that offer travel information inform travelers about this risk.
In a letter published in the British Medical Journal, authored by a Dr John Widdrington, an infectious disease specialist at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, the experts cited three recent cases of imported malaria in U.K. travelers who had returned from Gambia. It said increasing use of websites that offer cheaper last-minute bookings for holidaymakers means that many travelers fail to get prescription for anti-malarial drugs in time to prevent them from infection on arrival in malaria endemic destinations.
"Many travel websites and holiday brochures, including the website used by our patients, make no specific reference to the risk of contracting malaria," the doctors wrote.
Three of the patients said to have been infected in Gambia were found to have used the same travel website. Two of them made late bookings and therefore did not take preventative drugs, and the third patient who failed to take adequate medical advice also did not take such medication before travelling. All three were admitted to hospital with severe malaria within two weeks of returning home.
"Travel websites need to include explicit messages about taking medical advice and effective chemoprophylaxis before travelling to malaria-endemic areas,” the doctors note.
Chemoprophylaxis is the use of drugs to prevent the development of an infectious disease.
According to the doctors, “Advice on allowing sufficient time to organize this might reduce the particular risk to people making late bookings."

Samory and Jalamang
U have said it all sometimes we need to be very cautious of the way we portray our own Gambia. After all what matters is the Gambians back home.
We all know the benefit people get directly from tourism especially during its peak season. We should paint a picture which will not have adverse effect 4 our own people. How many families r affected by d effect of d off season? That alone is enough lesson. The message carried in the website is very clear and simple and does not deserve the twisting. No offence please. This is my candid opinion.

I think the heading of the article is misleading in the sense that it gives the impression that there is an added risk of malaria infection for travelers visiting the Gambia. There is nothing special about malaria in the Gambia, the risk is real for the Gambia as it is for any other malaria endemic country. In their letter, the authors cautioned travelers about failing to take medications before leaving for any malaria endemic country; they also recommended that travel agencies should ensure that clients should be adequately covered and this recommendation is general; not specific for the Gambia. Gambia is featured because its is one of the favorite tourist destinations and also we're around the peak tourist season, so the cases they saw were returning travelers from the Gambia and all cases were from one travel agent who in their money making quest, failed to ensure that their clients were protected. Just an opinion- don't want to scare tourists away
