The Challenges of Balangbaa
Saturday, 26 March 2011 10:33
By Mathew K JallowThe Yahya Jammeh regime has postponed the hated and coercive Set-setal exercise often held on the last Saturday of each month. It is a small, yet a significant concession to the will of the people, but it is only just the beginning. Balangbaa, set for tomorrow Saturday 26th. 2011, is designed to send a message to Yahya Jammeh that he has pushed us against the wall long enough and we have no alternative, but to stand up for our dignities and civil rights. The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia is aware of Yahya Jammeh’s capability for extreme cruelty, and is not taking the Balangbaa Days challenge lightly. The postponement of tomorrow’s Saturday 26th. 2011, street cleaning (Set-setal) exercise has, however preemp
ted the symbolic Balangbaa Day demonstration, but it does not go far enough to address the hated driving ban in the mornings on set-setal days. The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia is not a single agenda issue movement; rather, it is set to challenge the cruelty, barbarity and the incredible corruption of the Yahya Jammeh regime. Yahya Jammeh can keep his Set-setal, but the people’s participation in it must voluntary; not coercive, more important than that, the ban on driving on any set-setal day is the real bone of contention. Gambians are adults who can make their own decisions, and to be obliged to engage in Set-setal against our will is not conducive to peace and harmony in our society. The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia strongly believes that Set-setal exercise must be a voluntary community effort in which those who decide not to participate are not victimized by Yahya Jammeh. The most important thing, however, is the un-banning of vehicle operation during the Set-setal hours so citizens can once again move freely about their business unhindered by frivolous and meritless show of state power by Yahya Jammeh. Tomorrow Saturday 26th March 2011, is significant to The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia, to the extent the Gambians could be banned from operating their vehicles, but the regime’s change of heart and postponement of tomorrow’s Set-setal, has made it necessary to reconsider and postpone the peaceful demonstration set for tomorrow. The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia, whose Balangbaa campaign can claim some small victory, is a growing movement of Gambians who are vehemently opposed to Yahya Jammeh’s regime to want to see it collapse by any means necessary. As a movement of patriotic Gambians, our unshakable and unapologetic believe that Yahya Jammeh’s regime must be taken out by ANY means necessary, sets us apart from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Socialist/Communist, the Party of People Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), who remain entrenched in the belief in elections are the only route to political change in our country. Meanwhile, we call on our young people to continue the good work of spreading the message of the Balangbaa Movement all across the country in order to build a massive grass root support especially among the young people. The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia extends complement s to all the young people of our country who have made it possible to make Yahya Jammeh blink. Our work is, however, just beginning. Moving forward, we need to build a critical mass of dissatisfied, patriotic Gambians who want to see regime change and a return to the ideals human and civil rights for all Gambians. Our ultimate objective is to end the impunity and cruelty of the Yahya Jammeh regime. The new slogan of The Coalition for Civil Disobedience in The Gambia, and Balangbaa Movement’s battle-cry is: The killings must stop; the tribalism must cease; the corruption must end; Yahya Jammeh must go.
