A band of fifty armed elements believed to belong to the Movement of the Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) recently attacked the village of Diacounda in the Southern Senegalese region of Casamance. Several millions in cash and merchandise were stolen.MFDC_rebels
According to reports, gunmen, more than fifty of them and armed to the teeth, burst into the village of Diacounda, capital of a rural community of the same name, and looted several shops. The assailants reportedly ran off with several million of francs CFA as well as merchandise estimated at several millions. Also reportedly taken away were laptops and a motorcycle, according to eye witness reports.
The attackers reportedly arrived in the village late into the night and then shots were heard, scaring the people off. Some eye witness accounts say after their operation, which lasted about three hours, the armed men headed to a village in The Gambia located a few miles away from Diacounda.
Dakar daily, Lobservateur, cited sources who said loyalist soldiers did not consider it necessary to react to avoid fire fights that could have lead to casualties on the civilian side.
MFDC rebels have since taken to sporadic attacks on civilian targets and looting. It has been a case of cat and mouse game between them and the Senegalese army.
The people of Diacounda though, the latest victims of such attack, are calling for the installation of electricity as soon as possible, because, they say, the absence of current fosters insecurity.
Amadou Manga, a resident of the village, told Lobservateur that "for several years, Senelec installed electricity poles” but that still now the village hasn’t got electricity supply.
“We are exposed to bandits, attacks and cattle rustling," he said.

When a region is full of people who think like Yaya Jammeh, this is the unfortunate tragedy that unfolds.Cassamance has such a great economic potential but it's people will continue to live in poverty because of a few incompetent and selfish seperatists who are convinced that the rest of Senegal are out to exploit their resources, not knowing that both sides could benefit each other through dialogue and trade. Why would Dakar extend infrastructure into an area plagued with lawlessness and banditry?

Their arguments remind me so much of Jammeh's anti western crusade......
