Senegal:‘Fake bomb’ raises alarm at regional bank
Thursday, 27 May 2010 10:47
By Kemo ChamA string of calls by an anonymous caller, informing of an imminent explosion of what the authorities are now describing as a fake bomb continued last Wednesday, creating panic among staffers at the headquarters of the regional bank, Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), located in the Senegalese capital of Dakar.

Like in the previous days, the caller said that the building housing the headquarters of the bank would erupt in 20 minutes.
Acting to allay fears among staffers, the president of the bank, Philippe - Henri Dacoury-Tabley, on Tuesday vowed that the authors of “this false bomb threats will be put under arrest," describing Senegal as a stable country.
Mr Tabley reportedly convened a video-conference to assure employees of the bank scattered across the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) countries of the bank’s safety.
Last Wednesday, it emerged that the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Senegalese police had already put names and faces to some, if not all, of those suspected of involvement in the plot.
It followed that last Thursday, a mysterious fire broke out in the premises of the central bank; but it was quickly restraint by fire fighters.
Records also show that there have been two other smaller fire outbreaks in the same bank premises in recent times.
