Senegalese transporters angry with Gambia gov’t

Farafenni_Ferry_ServiceThreaten to boycott Farafenni Ferry Crossing
JollofNews - Tension is brewing between Gambia and Senegal over alleged maltreatment of Senegalese transporters who frequent the Farafenni ferry crossing point in Gambia en route to the Southern Senegalese region of Casamance.
Senegal’s premier news website, Seneweb, Friday reported that Senegalese transporters who use this route are planning to embark on a massive boycott, which has the potential of hugely hurting the Gambian economy.Farafenni_Ferry_Service
The Gambia Ports Authority is one of a few major revenue gaining institutions for a country almost totally surrounded by its bigger neighbor.
Seneweb cited the National Road Transport Union of Senegal which, in a meeting in the city of Kaolack, Thursday, set Saturday March 26th as the day for the boycott.
The Senegalese accused the Gambian government for the harassment faced by many Senegalese Transporters such as blocking of their trucks and recurring failures of the anchoring platform at the ferry terminal.
Citing the head of the Senegalese transporters union, Alassane Ndoye, the report ruled out any movement towards Gambia, and advised vehicles owners to take the longer route through Tambacounda.
There have been problems relating to this ferry crossing point in the past, which had degenerated into diplomatic row. A notable one was in 2005 when Senegalese truck drivers went up in arms protesting against sudden increase in cost of crossing ticket by the Gambia government.
That was so serious enough to prompt the intervention of the sub regional bloc of ECOWAS.
