Senegalese rebels kill one in highway ambush
Wednesday, 17 November 2010 23:52
Armed men stopped six vehicles including minibuses and forced passengers out onto the road in the Sedhiou region, said a military official who would not be named.
"One of the drivers tried to flee in his vehicle but the gunman opened and killed one of the passengers," said the official.
Three others were injured in the gunfight, and the attackers, suspected to be rebels of the Casamance Movement of Democratic Forces, fled with three vehicles, the official said.
Casamance, which is cut off from northern Senegal by the Gambia, has been caught in a separatist rebellion since 1982, and a peace accord signed in 2004 failed to stop the violence.
