Senegalese Human Rights activist Urges Gambian Authorities to Stop Blocking Online Newspapers
Thursday, 28 April 2011 12:46
(Jollofnews) - In the wake of a tightening internet control, the head of the Dakar based Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights
human (RADDHO), Alioune TINE, is urging the government of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh to desist from the act of blocking online newspapers, describing such act as a gross violation of freedom of expression and right to information.
“I am revolted by the fact the Gambia government continues to blatantly muzzle the press. It is time for them to stop blocking online newspapers which constitute alternative sources of information,” he voiced out.
Following the blockage of major online newspapers such as Freedomnewspaper.com and TheGambiaecho.com during these past years, Gambia internet users have recently been denied access to Jollofnews.com. This reinforcement of internet barriers has left their readers flabbergasted as self-censorship continues to hang over local newspapers.
“More internet barriers is not the answer,” Tine said, but was quick to add: “put freedom of the press at the centre stage of the development process.”
For the President of RADDHO, “denying open access to internet is synonymous to weakening the voice of the people.” He therefore called on the authorities to lift the firewall that has plunged the country’s internet users into a “long period of darkness…”
However, to many analysts, this latest call for a loosening of internet filtering practices in Gambia has no chances of being heard amid the
enthusiastic tumult it has provoked in the media fraternity. In the meantime, the content of banned news sites is highly likely to continue to remain inaccessible to Gambian internet users due to 'security reasons'...

That is what Gbagbo supporters used to say before they abundant him. It a an old nonsense ranting baselessly until your eyes are given back to you and hope is not late if you or your relevant ones oppressing and making Gambians vanished in that small country.
I am delighted to be the next High Commissioner to The Gambia. My wife, Jacki, and I are well aware of the unique charm of the country and its people. I look forward to taking up my new position and working with the Government of the Republic of The Gambia on matters of common interest.
Relevant people have better business to look after rather than ranting baselessly.
