Senegal Secures $560m To Build New Airport
Monday, 19 September 2011 15:03
Senegal has secured $560 million in long-term financing for the construction of the new Blaise Diagne International
Airport, 45 kilometres east of Dakar.According to the country’s Ministry of International Cooperation, “A group of several banks has agreed to financing amounting to $560 million dollars for the Aeroport Internationale Blaise Diagne.”

Senegal is seeking to replace its existing airport just outside Dakar with a new one about 45km outside the city, in order to ease traffic in the capital and boost capacity in an effort to become a regional hub.
According to the Senegalese government, the financing will come from the African Development Bank, the French Development Agency, the West African Development Bank, and other banks from South Africa, Canada and Saudi Arabia.
The terms were not disclosed, and the release did not say when the project is expected to be completed.
The new international airport will replace the current Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport Dakar-Yoff to meet the projected traffic by 2025.
When completed, it will be able to handle 3mppa and 80,000 aircraft movements each year, which is expected to relieve the air and road congestion at the existing Dakar airport.
Initially a 42,000sqm terminal, double the size of the existing one, will be built on two levels and will have direct access to six gangways.
To start with, the airport will have 30 aircraft parking positions and will be able to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400.
