Senegal lands landmark housing deal
Monday, 15 March 2010 21:23
Karim Wade, Senegalese Minister of International Cooperation, Spatial Planning, Air Transportation and Infrastructure, Sunday signed an agreement
for a landmark project with Saudi officials, involving the construction of over 30,000 housing units. The memorandum of understanding was signed in the Saudi city of Jeddah by the Senegalese minister and President and Director General of the
Islamic Corporation for Private Sector Development (SID, the financial arm of the Islamic Development Bank for the private sector), Khalid Mohamed Al-Abood, as well as the executive chairman of the International Society For Investment Company, Dr. Hatim Jamil Mukhtar. Involving a total of 33,000 housing units, the project is said to be part of the Senegalese government’s ''a family a shelter,'' programme, initiated by President Abdoulaye Wade.
Senegalese officials envisage that the project will accelerate the implementation of a parallel plan of the government, designed to ‘‘re-house’’ victims of last season’s floods.
According to Karim Wade, the objective of the project is to relocate families affected by the floods, while facilitating access of the disadvantaged to homes to offer guarantees of comfort in an urban built-up, and so contribute substantially to reducing poverty.
''This project is of particular interest to land because it will enable territorial imbalances, by providing for housing to new urban centers in Dakar, the new city and secondary cities of the interior countries,'' he was quoted on Seneweb.com.
The same report indicated that in addition to the housing project, the agreement also offers opportunities for cooperation in projects and sectors that include agriculture, energy, tourism and integrated economy.
