Senegal joins the Space race

As President Wade announces creation of a space agencyJollofNews - Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has unveiled a highly ambitious plan of creating a space agency, Senegalese Press Agency (APS) reported Friday.
According to a statement attributed to the last meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday, President Wade briefed members of his government of an audience he gave earlier to a representative of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) in relation to some civilian and military space projects.

EADS, through its subsidiary Astrium, submitted to the Senegalese a telemedicine project to be funded by the European Space Agency in two African countries, one of which is Senegal.
"Also,” APS cited the statement by the Council of Ministers released Friday, “the Head of State informed the Council of its decision to establish a space agency in Senegal and that he will visit the headquarters of EADS in Toulouse (France )".
This project will see Senegal joining Nigeria and South Africa, which are presently leading Africa’s pioneering space race, in a project that has until now been considered a no go area for African countries.
Both Nigerian and South African space agencies presently focus on developing space technologies ranging from satellites to other areas such as telemedicine for health, land mapping and telecommunications.
Nigeria established the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in 1998 and developed a 25-year roadmap for the Nigeria Space Program. It focuses on, among others, basic space science and technology, remote sensing, satellite meteorology, communications and information technology, in addition to defense and security. Nigeria joined South Africa, three years ago, as the second country on the continent to launch its own satellite.
