Saturday, 30 July 2011 22:06
(Goal) - Seattle Sounders FC has signed Gambian midfielder Amadou Sanyang, the team announced Saturday. Sanyang is a 19-year-old central midfieder who can also
play in defense and has previous MLS experience with Toronto FC.Sounders FC head coach highlighted Sanyang's versatility and range of skills as the impetus for signing the player.
"Positionally, Amadou is a good fit for us because he can play either central midfield or in the back," Schmid said. "He's a good passer, a good defender, and he
can cover a lot of ground."Sanyang was signed by Toronto at age 17 and made his debut on his 18th birthday, on Aug. 1, 2009. He went on to feature in 20 regular season games over the 2009 and 2010 seasons, starting 15. However, Toronto declined to exercise his option following the 2010 season, leaving him as a free agent.
Sanyang had spent his youth career in his homeland with Real de Banjul, helping the team to the Gambian championship, being named the league's best midfielder in the process. He has represented Gambia at the U-17 and U-20 levels, but has yet to make an appearance at the senior international level.
The midfielder joins a growing contingent of Gambian players in MLS, including Kenny Mansally and Sainey Nyassi (New England Revolution), Mamadou Danso (Portland Timbers), and Mustapha Jarju (Vancouver Whitecaps FC).
