Sanna Nyassi reflects on time with Gambian national team

After dealing with a some flight connection issues, Sanna Nyassi returned to Sounders FC camp this week from international
duty with the Gambian national team. A week ago today, Gambia beat Namibia 3-1 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier. Seattle is facing a travel-heavy schedule, but Nyassi has all his teammates beat.
"It was a long trip -- close to 20 hours back home," he said after training Saturday. "It was good to see my (national team) teammates back together. It's been a while -- we didn't play together since January. It was good being back home playing for my country. I didn't get to play, but I'm still hoping to get playing minutes."
Nyassi didn't see time in the game, but it was a big day for his twin brother, Sainey, who scored a goal. Some early reports incorrectly had Sanna as the goal scorer, which came as a surprise to the Sounder.
"A friend of mine called me right after the game, and he told me, 'Oh, I'm watching the Sounders' game but they say that you scored a goal,' " Nyassi said. "I told him, 'It wasn't me, it was my brother.'
"It's all the same. I would have scored (laughs)."
Steve Zakuani and Brian Schmetzer were listening to that last answer and got a kick out of it. What's always clear is the rivalry between the two brothers. While both were on international duty, their two clubs teams were playing in New England.
While the brothers have never played against each other on the field, Sanna Nyassi said he can't wait to take on Sainey.
"I don't know when it's going to happen. I'm still looking forward to it. Maybe next year. I really want to get him."
That competitive fire was instead directed to the MLS game between their teammates. Sainey and Revolution teammate Kenny Mansally (also with the Gambian team) were pumping up New England. Sanna, however, predicted something more like Seattle's 3-0 win at Qwest Field this summer.
"When we woke up in the morning, I went to the website and saw (New England had won) 3-1," Sanna Nyassi said. "I was shocked."
