Remanded Gambian gender activists file bail application

PANA, Dakar - Lawyers defending Gambia's prominent gender activists, Dr. Isatou
Touray and Amie Bojang Sissoho, who were remanded at the country's Central Prison, on Friday filed a bail application at Banjul High Court, PANA confirmed from here. According to reliable sources, Gambian High Court, presided over by Justice Emmannuel Amadi, received the 
application filed by the defence lawyers who are seeking bail for the two leading human rights defenders in the country.Meanwhile, Dr. Touray, Executive Director and Sissoho, Programme Coordinator of Gambia Committee for Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP), were recently remanded by a magistrate of a lower court.
Gambian authorities have accused the duo 'theft' involving 30,000 Euros -- a charge they continue to deny.
Rights groups and family members of the detained gender activists have condemned the arrest and subsequent detention of the two, claiming that the whole episode was politically-motivated and was based on an 'executive order'.
