President Jammeh Vs Britain, Round Two
Sunday, 08 August 2010 23:52
By Yusupha ChamAs predicted here on Jollofnews, Gambian President Yahya Jammeh did not disappoint in trading insults and missiles at the British people as he celebrated 16 years of his rule. This year, he chose a fitting theme, visa fees and visa rejections, calling it stealing. Again, the very choice of his arguments, cheap visa fees, amongst all other important issues in the World, suggests that Jammeh's understanding of international politics is narrow and misguided.

Before advancing further and without trying to hold briefs for the British, who are no saints either - let me indicate that with all fairness the British have an international policy that affects all countries in the world when it comes to visa fees. They have stated it very clearly that visa fees are used to purchase papers and fund many other expenses that are incurred in the processing of a visa application. The fees are not refundable and this has been made clear to all and sundry. Even the Primary six school child knows that.
So, Mr President, why not choose a more important issue to launch your fight from? No, you cannot because you are not ready to face any honest exchange of ideas on any issue concerning British policy towards our dear country, The Gambia.
Take this from me today. The British are not perfect, yes, but they are not interested in re-colonizing Gambia or using political strategy to do so. This is simply so because there are so many more strategic countries of interest to the British than The Gambia. This is why, in fact, your rule last longer without the World shouting you down every day.
On the contrary, The Gambia is the one which needs Britain and had it not been for Yahya Jammeh’s style of rule, we would have been the greatest beneficiaries of British Cooperation in West Africa. Remember, and still on the visa issue, before Jammeh came there was no visa between us even though it was introduced in neighboring Anglophone countries in our region, way back in early 90s.
Coincidentally or not, it was introduced when Jammeh started his tirades against them which led them to toughen their policy and included Gambians among those requiring visas to visit London. Let me ask you this question, Mr President. Now how would you call a person or people who asks you to stop stealing from your own people; stop killing your own people; respect your own people; give your own people a voice on matters concerning them and stop abusing your own people? By normal standard such a person or people are your friends. And that is all what the British need from Gambia. They would love to see each member of the Commonwealth adopt civilized methods of governance that guarantees democracy, free speech, association and transparency instead of tyranny and chaotic style of leadership that makes the leader a master and the servants’ slaves such as what exists in Gambia now. Instead of embarrassing Gambians with false claims of an AIDs cure, or dressing like a scarecrow wielding a cutlass or machete among civilized dressed Presidents, you should consider mending your ways and embrace democratic principles. These are international norms but British imposed.
The British also wants you to speak and act carefully and civilize when dealing with the international community. Of course you do not care about those ethics from the civilized world because you do not care whether Gambians in general suffer or not. Instead you prefer befriending isolated and devilish states and leaders who fills your pocket instead of the nations' coffers.
