President Jammeh sacks GAMTEL boss, appoints in-law
Friday, 24 December 2010 20:47
PANA - Gambia Telecommunication Company Ltd - Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has sacked Katim Touray
as chief of the country's telecoms giant, Gambia Telecommunication Company Ltd (GAMTEL), replacing him with Jamal Miknas, said to be the President's in-law.
According to official sources, no reason was given for Mr. Touray's dismissal. It was the second time the GAMTEL's chief was being removed from the post.
In January 2009, Touray, an accountant and telecoms expert, was re-hired to steer the affairs of the troubled company.
GAMTEL and its subsidiary mobile telephone company, GAMCEL, have been witnessing high turnover of their leadership in recent years.
In 2007, the government decided to sell 50 per cent of GAMTEL's shares to a Lebanese-owned company, 'Spectrum International Group', much to the disapproval of many Gambians.
But barely 18 months later, the government in November 2008 cancelled the agreement.
