President Jammeh inaugurates Qcell House, 3G mobile services
Monday, 26 July 2010 01:25
By Abdoulie JohnPresident Yahya Jammeh inaugurated, last Saturday, a newly completed building housing the provider of the newest GSM service in the country, Qcell.
Located along Kairaba Avenue, Qcell House was inaugurated alongside the company’s highly sophisticated 3G Services.
The colorful ceremony, graced by a good number of cabinet ministers and foreign diplomats, was part of the 16 anniversary of the July 22nd ‘Revolution’, now called ‘Freedom Day’, and it also witnessed by a huge crowd - one of the biggest in recent times.

In his address, the Gambian leader expressed delight at being able to inaugurate the magnificent building as well as the 3G mobile services.
“As you all probably already know, Qcell is the forth GSM operator in The Gambia. Uniquely, however, the company is also the first and only mobile company to operate a 3G network in The Gambia,” Jammeh said, provoking quiet a bit of applause from among the massive crowd.
“The occasion today is therefore historic as it represents a significant milestone not only for this giant Mobile company, but also for my government and the people of The Gambia whose wish of becoming part of the global ‘knowledge society’ is being fulfilled from the demonstrations around us this afternoon by Qcell.”
President Jammeh hailed the man behind the project, Muhammed Jah, the Managing Director of Qcell, for his zeal and vision as a consistent player in the country’s development endeavor.
“This majestic building, which is stylistically pleasing to the eye, is itself a symbol of the high and enviable ambition, as well as big thinking of a person with determination,” Jammeh said of Mr Jah.
According to the Gambian leader, his government will relentlessly deploy more efforts in the coming years so as to register more breakthroughs in the ICT sector. “We will continue to explore new or added frontiers, towards fulfilling the aspirations of the sector, including the aspiration to ensure that quality ICT services in The Gambia are both accessible and affordable and that the environment is conducive to healthy competition for all operators in the industry. My government believes that a viable ICT sector is needed to support the VISION 2020, the MDGs and the Silicon Valley Dream, and as such it would continue to attach importance to the sector,” Jammeh said.
Speaking earlier, Muhammed Jah said that the launching of Qcell Limited and Qcell House constituted a cause inspired by President Jammeh as “he consistently encouraged every young Gambian to invest his/her wealth, skills, knowledge, discipline and what have you, to the development of our mother land, The Gambia.”
The Qcell boss, who happens to be force behind one of the country’s foremost internet provider, Quantum Net, recalled how he started his company from humble beginnings to a solid investment of over one billion dalasis. A typical home made success story…
“Every success,” Mr Jah said, “is a function of many variables. Hard work is obviously one of them, but no amount of work would have sufficed had the economic conditions in The Gambia not been favorable for the growth of businesses. Our expansion therefore bespeaks an economy full of opportunities and potentials, widely spread out for the entrepreneurial and the brave to feast in.”
Jah went on: “Our being here today to officially launch Qcell Sunu Buss, the latest chapter in the ongoing Q-story, is demonstration enough. And our success story is only one among many.” With Qcell Sunu Buss meeting success in facilitating the advent of the country’s first ever 3G mobile services, its founder made it very clear that new technologies always impose new imperatives.
“My deep interest in the new technology, combined with my entrepreneurial aspirations, together shaped my ambition to bring the latest technology to the people of the Gambia,” he said.
It is in light of this great innovative capacity that Gambia’s fourth GSM operator has, within a short period, become the much-talked-about that brings solace in people’s hearts.
As Muhammed Jah eloquently put it, “the impact of Qcell Sunu Buss on the GSM market, after only a year’s operation, has been considerable, not the least because the people in The Gambia welcomed us with open arms, support and generosity.”
“With Qcell Sunu Buss, we are not interested in making noise because we know that quality often speaks for itself,” he assured.

The point is, we all, as Gambians, wants to see a prosperous Gambia. What we do not want is a situation where people are forced to go by one man's wish.
Why fill the prisons and torture chambers just so he can build one more goddamn monument? Would Chief Manneh or Deyda Hydare have stopped such "development" even if they could? And the other poor souls languishing in Mile 2? Why Gambia, why?
Thanks for the information, kindly next time include a picture of the buliding so the world can see that Gambia is progressing.. Forward together backward NEVER.....
