President Yahya Jammeh accuses Britain of backing opposition

jammeh2Gambian President Yahya Jammeh accused former colonial ruler Britain on Wednesday of backing opposition politicians ahead of 2011 elections, and said the West African nation would not be colonised again.
Jammeh has long been criticised for arresting dissenters, rights activists and journalists. Earlier this month a Gambian court sentenced eight people to death after finding them guilty of plotting to overthrow the government.jammeh2
In April, the United States and Britain criticised the jailing of an opposition member for using a megaphone at a rally without permission.
"Why are they (the West) not sponsoring the ruling government if they are talking about democracy?" Jammeh said at a rally with thousands of supporters in Banjul, the capital.
Jammeh accused Britain of funding the opposition, but said the opposition would "never" secure a ministerial post because Gambians were not fools.
"I swear that the Gambia will not be colonised twice. Let them do whatever they want to do, but this country will not be colonised twice," Jammeh said.
The British High Commissioner in Banjul could not be reached for comment.
Jammeh, who has ruled the tiny nation sandwiched inside Senegal with an iron fist since a 1994 coup, is due to face elections next year. There are four opposition parties but they complain about harassment and in the last election in 2006 Jammeh won about 70 percent of the vote.
The eight handed death sentences earlier this month included the former chief of defence staff, former director of the national intelligence agency and two businessmen, one of whom is Lebanese.
They are accused of planning to oust the government in a drug-funded plot involving foreign mercenaries. The case followed a waves of arrests and sackings in the country.
The British government and the United States spoke out in April after Femi Peters, campaign manager for the opposition the United Democratic Party, was sentenced to one year in jail for using a megaphone at a rally without permission.
"My message to the West is that if you think that Africans are stupid and you can come and fool us twice, then go elsewhere in Africa and fool them but the Gambia is a no go area for you," Jammeh said at the rally.

I think what this"WAZUNGU" Man call: Michael Scales said here, we deserved it because since some of our brothers put thesame kind of rejoinders here, and whenever people chellenge them about such "Wazungu' and their meddling in mother Africa some are seeing it in the other way around, But I think you've now started to seeing the real color of one of them here.
Well, Mr. Muzungu (Michael), you are welcome but when speaking, direct your wording to whom you want to and try to respect the rest, but whenever you generalize it, that is tantamount to....
And if you're testing our ability to respond then go ahead next time and see.

In the service of the Gambia I remain

Michael Scales

If you don't want to be disrespected please mind your words and you are being warned and i personally appreciate your comments in Gambian affairs, but don't take us as fools and i mean your language is being out of line..I will foremost appeal to Jollofnews to put you in check or i will go all out,and who the hell you to say that we don't want you back as if Gambians are so desperate to cling on to the BRITS that are deporting our people like and exodus. If you want to respond to President Jammeh do so by directing your words to him individual, but don't generalize to all Gambians..Just warning English man

Hey MIKE

This foul mouthed clown does not truly represent the Gambian character. He is nothing but a "dead weight" that has stifled the very life of a once happy and carefree society of people who lived together in harmony.
This monster from the dark medieval forest of Cassamance has turned Gambia into the laughing stock of the world with his witch hunts and herbal concoctions.

The sun has set on colonialism and countries like Ghana and others that are richer in resources than Gambia, have picked up the pieces and moved on.These countries have rejected the totalitarian yoke of military dictators and are building political systems that are earning them the respect and admiration of the world.

I am sure i speak for many Gambians when i say that a lot of people both at home and abroad are shaking their heads in bewilderment and wondering just how the hell this clown slipped through the system and made it to the position of power he now occupies.

Neither....

Britain or anybody else would wish to colonise a "dead weight"

Britain did well to free ourselves from this perpetual drain on our good hearts and minds.

We don't want you back. period !!!

Keep your drugs...your coruption and your

foul mouthed..and threatening ways.

The Gambia has nothing....Nothing to offer...except heartache.

When Gambian's can free Gambian's...and say look...we have progressed to a position of freedom and total equality.

Then come and join us.Until then The Gambia has nothing to offer and nothing to say.

...But there are standards universally acceptable everywhere which revolves round civil liberties which are the BASIC foundation for development in any community for socio-economic advancement. This unfortunately lacks in our home where yaya alone now gets rich at expense of all hence our solemn relentless search for redress & solutions which’s on-going. For we can’t afford another Liberia; GOD FORBID.

...‘NOT conducive for electrification ’/development in general whilst telling others that ‘no development for them for holding opposing views’. Knowledge’s different from book memorisation achieving hard copy certificates. Others refer to yaya & supporters as ‘illiterates’ for they can’t comprehend how an educated person can be selfish to advocate to put own home on fire as yaya intends if he hasn’t get his ways at all cost. So you can reflect on your honest conscience on who’re the ‘barbaric offenders’ here. I see these as people formally ‘educated’ with personal agenda/motives which worth more to them than communal/National. Some of these motives include tribal & other personal issues which lie with yaya’s control at helm. There are no specific ‘perfect’ places free of short comings where we can ‘learn theories from’.
