One killed in suspected rebel attack in Senegal's south
Friday, 27 May 2011 23:03
(AFP) – Armed men presumed to be separatist rebels attacked a village in Senegal's troubled Casamance region
Friday, looting shops and killing a young man, a security source and a witness told AFP."A group of rebels burst into the village of Djinbanar at dawn," about 110km (63 miles) from Kolda, one of the main cities in the southern region, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The term "rebel" is typically used to refer to members of the Casamance Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC), a rebel group which has been fighting for independence from Senegal since 1982.
The attackers "killed a young man" who tried to run away when he saw them, the source said, adding they looted eight shops, robbing one shopkeeper of 10 million FCFA (15,245 euros, $25,000).
A civil servant in the village confirmed the story.
"Armed men, they were rebels, attacked the village early this morning. A youth who saw them tried to run away, he was shot dead," he said.
The security source said the attackers fled the village in the direction of the nearby Guinea Bissau border.
Most of Casamance is separated from the rest of Senegal by tiny Gambia.
Sporadic violence continues in one of Africa's longest running conflicts, which peace deals and negotiations have failed to halt, hampered mainly by splits in the MFDC.
A renewal of conflict at the end of 2010 has seen at least 19 Senegalese soldiers and an unknown number of rebels killed since December.
