Nigerian gov't under pressure over jailing of citizen in Gambia
Wednesday, 20 October 2010 13:19
Femi Falana, lawyer and leading human rights activist is taking the Nigerian government to task over the jailing of a Nigerian citizen in Gambia.
Chairman of the National Conscience Party of Nigeria, Lawyer Falana has petitioned the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister over the “unlawful”
imprisonment of the founder and director of the Banjul based Africa in Democracy and Good governance (ADG), Edwin Nebolisa Nwakaeme.Mr Nwakaeme was arrested and prosecuted for giving false information to the office of the Gambian president,
Yahya Jammeh, over an issue involving the president’s daughter. It was wrong for the Gambian government to have prosecuted and imprisoned a Nigerian citizen for giving false information to the president’s daughter who is not a public officer, the vocal human rights lawyer and politician said.
He described the arrest and subsequent imprisonment of Nwakaeme by the Gambian government as a miscarriage of justice and urged the minister to use his good offices to ensure his immediate release.
