Nigeria starts off with a win against Gambia
Tuesday, 27 July 2010 00:03
Nigeria’s U-19 team bowled out Gambia for a victory of 10 wickets at the synthetic surface of the U-Tech Cricket Pavilion, Lubombo Region,
Swaziland, on Monday, to get off to a winning start.Abioye Abiodun, captain of the U-19 cricket team had said before their first match in Swaziland that the team’s strength is bowling; and true to those words, he was very confident that his team has the ability to win the ICC Africa U19 CWCQ Tournament. He told icc-cricket.yahoo.net,
that “To a large extent, we are confident of successfully winning the tournament. The lads are working well and with the help our coaches; we will achieve our goal, which is winning.” “Our team’s strength lies more on our bowling options, including good fielders. The batting side is not so much of a weakness, but it is definitely not a strong point either.”The team will play Rwanda today at the Ubombo Country Club. Host country, Swaziland also got off to a winning start; they defeated Mozambique by three wickets. The Swazis are hoping to use the tournament to raise the awareness of players for the game in the land-locked country. In a statement released by the Swaziland Cricket Association, Secretary, Neil Williams, he said “We as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) are also reaching out to the youth. We are inviting the young boys and girls in the area to attend these matches on a daily basis. During lunch breaks, we shall have development coaches to coach these youngsters. Each boy and girl will also receive a bat and a ball. The tournament is also expected to launch the kingdom of Swaziland as a tourist enclave. Williams added that, “The extravaganza of cultures during the week of the tournament will be an indication of Africa unity.” The winner of the competition will go to Namibia to compete in the International Cricket Council-organised World championship qualifiers in August.
