OJ Frowns At Changes To Gambia’s Work Days

OJ(JollofNews) – Omar Amadou Jallow of the Gambia’s Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP) has called on President Yahya Jammeh to reconsider his decision to alter the working days and hours of the country’s civil service.

Under the changes that are coming into force on Friday, the country's civil servants will work from Monday to Thursday from 8am to 6pm while Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be dedicated for prayers, social activities and agriculture.

But in an interview with JollofNews, ‘OJ’ Jallow who is on a visit to the United Kingdom said he finds it really ludicrous that Mr Jammeh has taken the decision to change the country’s working hours without even bothering to hold a national consultation particularly with the National Assembly.

“This is the most the ludicrous things I have ever heard,” he said. “This is a tacit demonstration of the total control of power and resources by one individual in the Gambia and I think every sane Gambian will be against this decision.”

Mr Jallow added that changing the working hours of the Gambian civil service from 8am to 6pm will destabilised a lot of families in the country.
OJOmar Amadou Jallow
He said: “We all know how difficult the transport system in the Gambia is particularly with the destruction of the GPTC by this government, which was one of the best public transport systems in the continent.  I am therefore appealing to the government particularly the cabinet to start an engagement with the President for him to rescind this decision. It does not augur well for the Gambian people and the country’s economy.

“The economy of every country in the world depends on the work output of its people. The productivity of the people is important for the economic growth and social stability of every society. People are looking at extending their working hours instead of reducing it. If all major economies are growing because of the hard work of their people, why is a developing country like ours that relies heavily on foreign aid making our people work less hours?

“We want Africa to be independent but we will never be independent without being economically independent and we will never be economically independent if we are not ready to work hard and take control of the development of our country. The decision to change the working days and hours is not correct and should be rescinded.”

Reacting to the President claims that giving civil servants an extra day off will allow them to ‘grow what they eat and eat what they grow as a healthy nation,” Mr Jallow, who was Agriculture minister in the deposed PPP government of Sir Dawda Jawara said the country’s declining agriculture will not regain its glory days unless the Jammeh regime put in place a comprehensive agriculture policy, which would enhance and increase the agricultural base of the economy.

Mr Jallow said: “Sometimes I don’t understand the real people who are advising President Jammeh. The Gambia and surrounding countries have always been agricultural countries well before our grandparents were born. It is the responsibility of governments to put in place policies that enhance and increase the agricultural base of their economy.

“We have all realised that the agriculture productivity of the Gambia has been declining since President Jammeh came to power. The cultivation of rice, cotton and groundnut has fallen drastically because of the decisions of the Jammeh regime to discard the policies and projects I signed while I was Agriculture minister.

“In my last trade season as Agriculture minister, the Gambia produced over 100,000 tons of groundnut and so many thousand tons of rice and cotton. But last year, we couldn’t even get 30, 000 tons of groundnuts in The Gambia. Whether that is an improvement in agriculture is left for the Gambian people to decide.”

Mr Jallow added that instead of encouraging villagers in the country to abandon their farms and work on the President’s farm in Kanilai, the Jammeh regime should reinstitute the Gambia Cooperative Union, which would help poor farmers in the country to have access to equipment and fertilisers to improve their farming and economic wellbeing.

“I have never visited Sir Dawda’s farm in Banjulnding throughout my tenure as Agriculture minister because I don’t think I had any business on his farm. My duty as Agriculture minister was to help Gambian farmers and not the president.  That was why the agricultural mission of the government was to improve agricultural production and livelihood of the farming community. That is why the cooperative movement had an important role to play.”

Shoya Rocassel, Every country has it own laws for every citizen to obey and follow, follow it not might lead you to face justice and if found guity one must be punished according to the law. So, whoever faulted the law, faces the consequencies. We have to think about our families before we committed delibrate crimes that could land us to severe circumstances. Unfortunately, those committed the crimes should be blamed for not caring their love ones. I always felt for the innocent families. I'm a good example.

Shoya Rocassel, Did I ever said that my President Jammeh Is GOD?or better than Muhammed (pbuh) or Jesus?

Did I ever said that,He is perfect and never made a mistake?

Didn't I asked for re-conciliation? YES.

President Jammeh, should be criticised but, shouldn't be insulted. he understand democracy very well.

Presidents do made taugh decisions sometimes. Being a leader comes with responsibilitie s and one has to made the call whether good or bad, unfortunate ly.

Scarlett, my dear. How right you! I only want to make a distinction between two things- Buleh Wanteh and Sosal. With the first the allegation is based on something that the person is perceived to have done. In that case he or she can defend him or herself. In the case of the latter it is unfounded and baseless and in such a case how can you defend yourself especially when there will be witnesses to support the "suskat". People were telling Agim to shut up. He had a story to tell about the true character of Gambians which you my dear sister have aptly captured in two words - "Sohorr" and "Eenyaan". What a sad description of a people who are purportedly religious. This speaks volumes about their Christianity or Islam. One thing I like about Jammeh, when he is ready for his liars that is the time they know who he really is. Ask Lang Tombong when he went into Mile 2 and had to meet his colleagues in the same place and condition? That day he knew that there is a God.

Radio Kang Kang, is Jammeh better than the holy prophet Muhammad (SWT) or Jesus who in their life time and even after death are criticized, maligned and called by all sorts of names? I think NOT.

Radio Kang Kang, I do not always want to be the one that puts the spanner in the wheels. However, I want to say that it is people like you who deify Jammeh. Jammeh is not God neither does he own The Gambia. Should he not also be apologizing to the people of The Gambia for the pain and anguish that he has caused to families. Whatever, we may say about the previous government people were free to talk, to criticize and to move around. The phenomenon of arbitrary arrests, abductions, detentions, killings and witch hunting was unknown. Children are crying, widows are mourning, parents are weeping, families are denied their well being as the main bread winner has disappeared. None pf the Gambians living abroad in exile or self imposed exile have never committed any atrocity that reaches the extent to any of the crimes that I have listed.

Please mark my words, many people are victims of others than Jammeh. Many were fired because someone maliciously reported them. Why? Because they wanted their positions.

Scarlett,

I was too young during the PPP era. But you see, my friend, every African regime has its share of nepotism. Please ask any African! As for impunity, it's very true Jammeh has done crazy things. But like you said, "BOLEH WANTEH", "ANYAA NANTEH", etc, are deep rooted in Jammeh's gov't.

Please mark my words, many people are victims of others than Jammeh. Many were fired because someone maliciously reported them. Why? Because they wanted their positions.

Gambiano,
Your last comment is true that we all kinda inter related in The Gambia. I have high regards for you my friend due to the fact that we share old memories of our alma mata.
But one thing we must fight is impunity, tribal ism ,nepotism, autoc ratic rule ,etc. We all know that Gambians need a kind of a hot head to rule BUT with limitations. Yaya needs to know that the country belongs to us all,not a one man show.
I worked for both goverments and believe me,i have witnessed corruption, nepo tism and infighting from both ends.
The reason that kept Jawara there for so long is the same that will keep yaya jammeh there too. Too much of infighting,"SOHORR,BOLEH WANTEH,AK EENYAAN". Thats why i left because i don't wanna die too young or go crazy or mile 2, just for another idiots selfish gains.l

Papierre,

... Man has to be careful with anger, and extra careful with justified anger!

..But just yesterday, I heard some folks say people need to bomb the Daily Observer for being what they're, or destroy all the pro-Jammeh facilities in The Gambia. See that crude intellecting?

Lol..Gambino, dont mind those angry statements..

We are Gambians..n true to who we are as 'ndongo banjul', no one gets hurt from our so called anger..

As i always remind people here, we dont kill each other..that is foreign..

I recall a day when my good friend; late Essa Bobb (SUKURO), came to me with a big bottle..n said 'I want my .. now..let me finish with this bottle n ..u will know..' I just smiled..

I know one thing, when pieces of broken bottles are flying, yield no ground, surrender no ground..n u are a Hero..

So Gambino..lol..stay calm n no one will harm u

Radiokangkang,

Great points! I know some of those people you listed that peacefully went home without being touched. I know them personally.

If Jawara could go home untouched, why not any peace-loving Gambian? And now, Jawara is enjoying more than Jammeh! Gambia is too small for chaos.

Gambiano, Exactlt!!! reconculiation is well overdue. I will be much appreciated if the president could find a soft space in his heart to forgive and forget. Because,by doing that will help to gain more human resource into our workforce. But, Anti-jammeh camp, shouldn't give up to PEACE. There are three things in life that should never be lost:
Peace,
Hope,
Honesty.
Abdoulie Kujabi,Lawyer Sillah,Ndow Njie,Price Sankanu,Alieu Badara Sowe and many others when HOME without being arrested. There are some ENEMY OF THE STATE,who will never venture returning back HOME,as long as president Jammeh in POWER. He may forgive but, I doubt that.

Radiokangkang,

"I am also a Mandinka,mum wollof,grandma Fula/Jola and my wife Wollof(fanafana )"

See, we're all Gambians and somehow related! Our grandparents didn't go to college, but they solved many problems with teasing and humour called "Sanuwuyaa". Just like how the Fulas and Jolas are "sanuwu". My wife is Fula and I criticise Fulas for everything in this world, except that they gave me such a beautiful girl.

On a much serious note, I know the anti-Jammeh camp is angry. But we need reconciliation in The Gambia, not hatred and war. And Jammeh and Jawara set a world-class example, perhaps unprecendented!
