New telecom operator for Senegal
Thursday, 03 June 2010 11:24
The Nigeria based telecommunications giant, Globacom, has extended its grip on the telecommunications industry in Africa after
completing a landmark deal with the Senegalese government. According to newspaper reports, the Lagos headquartered, privately owned telecommunications carrier won its latest license on Monday after it was issued by the Senegalese government, signed by the country’s Ministers of Finance and Telecommunications.

Already present in 4 countries in West Africa - Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Ghana and Ivory Coast, and described as one of the fastest growing multi-national carriers in the world, Globalcom has the goal of becoming the biggest and best carrier on the continent. Its chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., was quoted by This Day Nigeria as saying that the license would enable them to offer world class telecommunications services to the government and people of Senegal.
Globacom becomes the fourth telecommunications operator in the country, but closer in terms of services only to the national telecommunications operator, Sonatel, which, until now, has had a monopoly on the distribution of broadband.
Globacom’s new license, in addition to distribution of broadband Internet, will seek to improve deployment on terminating calls to mobile subscribers, reduce failure rates of calls and the cost of international calls, among a number of other facilities.
Senegalese newspaper, Seneweb, reported on Wednesday that the country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Agency and Posts (ARTP), was not involved in negotiations, or the signing of the contract, the monetary value of which, it added, was not specified.
Globacom’s new license will also allow it to land its gigantic trans-Atlantic submarine cable, Glo 1, in Senegal with opportunities to extend the infrastructure to Mali, according to This Day.
Globacom’s statement said that Glo 1, which is set to commence commercial services, will deliver transmission capacity that will offer unprecedented high speed internet and broad band services and make telecoms services much faster, more reliable and cheaper for consumers on the continent.
“In line with our vision, Glo will continue to play a major role in stimulating a new era of prosperity in the sub-continent and build facilities that will offer Africa advanced telecoms services such as teleconferencing, distance learning, disaster recovery, telemedicine, on-line diagnosis and video conferencing during surgery and research,” the statement from the office of Globa-com's Chairman said.
