New evidences on ‘murder’ of Gambian businessman emerges
Friday, 21 May 2010 18:52
As the police in Banjul continue their investigations on the alleged murder of a prominent businessman, Alhagie
Momodou Tunkara, there have been reports of evidences concerning the circumstances leading to his death.According to police spokesman, Inspector Sulayman Secka, four people have since been arrested and are helping the police with their investigation.

Those arrested are identified as Lamin Gaye, the principal suspect; Fabakary Gassama, an employee of Gambia Ports Authority; Sheriff Dibba; and Bafoday Sesawo alias Mbacke Faal, who is said to be a Marabout.
According sources in Farafennie, in northern Gambia, where the incident reportedly took place, the late Tunkara was duped in a money doubling scheme by self acclaimed Marabou Bafoday Sesawo through the help of his (Bafoday Sesawo’s) landlord, Sheriff Dibba, and the rest of the detained persons. The incident reportedly occurred sometime last month.
The accused are alleged to have collected some three hundred thousand dalasis from Tunkara on the promise that the Marabou would double it. Marabou Sesawo however went on to share the money with his accomplices and took to luring the businessman further in to undertaking some more spending by asking him to give out charity.
Sources said the situation stayed on like that with Marabout Sesawo giving assurances to Tunkara that all would be alright.
Souirces added that it went up to a point that Tunkara decided to confront the men, after apparently coming to his senses.
Accordingly, Tunkara demanded that the accused persons gave back his money, promising to report the matter to the police in the event that they failed to meet his demand.
In response, the accused allegedly ended up agreeing amongst themselves to deal with Tunkara before he gave them up to the police.
The evens leading to Tunkara’s death, as narrated by sources, go like this:
On the night of Wednesday 12 May 2010, between the hours of 3 and 4 am, Sheriff Dibba was asked to telephone Tunkara and ask him to collect his money. Dibba did exactly that, assuring Tunkara that the Marabou had finally doubled his money.
On Tunkara’s arrival at the Marabout’s house, the four accused persons subjected him to severe battering, thereby causing his death on the spot. They then carried his corpse and disposed it opposite Dibba’s compound. The bloodstained sticks and a piece of cloth stained with blood were later found by the police and some neighbors recognized the cloth as that of the Marabout's.
Sheriff Dibba, who was the first person to be arrested by the police, gave up and gave the names of his alleged accomplices to the investigators, which led to the arrest of Fabakary Gassama. And then the Marabout, who had since fled to his home village of Sami Karantaba Dotokoto, was arrested by Commissioner Pa Sylver and a team of officers from Bansang Police Station.
Four other youths from Senegal, who are said to be Islamic religious students (Talibehs) under Marabout Bafoday Mbake Faal, were also reportedly arrested by the police and are currently being detained at the Bansang Police Station, pending investigations.
It is not yet clear though if the Talibehs played any role in the murder.
