NATO says air strikes not targeting Gaddafi

Canadian_Lieutenant-General_Charles_Bouchard(Reuters) - NATO denied targeting members of Muammar Gaddafi's family on Sunday after a Libyan government spokesman said the leader had survived a NATO air strike in Tripoli that killed his youngest son and three grandchildren.
The Western alliance, which is conducting air strikes to protect civilians during an anti-Gaddafi rebellion, confirmed one of its targets included a command centre in the Tripoli neighbourhood late on Saturday in which the Libyan spokesman said Gaddafi and his family were targeted.Canadian_Lieutenant-General_Charles_Bouchard
"NATO continued its precision strikes against regime military installations in Tripoli overnight, including striking a known command and control building in the Bab al-Azizya neighbourhood shortly after 1800 GMT Saturday evening," it said.
NATO's commander of Libya operations, Canadian Lieutenant-General Charles Bouchard, said the target was part of a strategy to damage Gaddafi's ability to plan and conduct attacks on civilians.
"All NATO's targets are military in nature and have been clearly linked to the Gaddafi regime's systematic attacks on the Libyan population ... We do not target individuals," he said in a statement.
"I am aware of unconfirmed media reports that some of Gaddafi's family members may have been killed," he said. "We regret all loss of life, especially the innocent civilians being harmed as a result of the ongoing conflict."
On Saturday, the alliance dismissed an offer of a truce and negotiations from Gaddafi, saying it was not credible and reiterating its stance that it will target his military equipment and facilities while civilians are being threatened.
NATO has been in command of Western military operations in Libya for a month, fulfilling a U.N. mandate to enforce a no-fly zone over the north African country and an arms embargo.
Its strikes on Gaddafi's firepower have helped rebel forces but failed to tip the balance in a bloody civil war.
Bouchard also reiterated that NATO air strikes had not overstepped the alliance's U.N. orders.
"NATO is fulfilling its U.N. mandate to stop and prevent attacks against civilians with precision and care - unlike Gaddafi's forces, which are causing so much suffering."

What about the 1000s killed by his army in Misrata and benghazi and other cities in Libya. Are they not civilians too? or his son live is worth more than those thousands libyans he killed so far and the ones excuted secretly and in secret jails? Nato should bomb him and his family to ashes. He is a manipulative dictator as in Gambia and has done very bad things to africa...liberia and S. Leone and his continues shelling of his people is even unspeakable much more to defend a such an animal.

The interesting thing is that, libyans in benghazi said they never know his 29 son have 3 kids. Their is no deabte here. The man is the most evil and ruthless in the middle east. I am sure you lots will be laughing and dancing if he was left alone to enter 1m city Benghazi. Just like gambians are oppressed, kille d and exiled and I am sure you have been dancing since 1994. Evil hypocrites

NATO is definitely targeting Gaddafi and his family (mostly civilians) just to cut this expensive intervention short. We all know they have been after him for a long time. This western governments, especially France, Britain and Italy are after Libya's resources..period!

the western Government talk of civilians being killed, and that they are 'protecting' them, yet now Colonel Gadaffi's son and grand-children have been killed?? Are they not 'clvilians' as well?? I am absolutely disgusted as the sheer GREED shown by the Western Governments. That is the REAL reason behind these bombings - Oil!! All of the Governments have worked alongside Gadaffi for years - no sign of him being described as a 'tyrant' or 'despot' then..... What also galls me is the fact the Mugabe is welcomed into Italy for the beautification of Pope John Paul II. Talk about double standards? I do not feel that Gadaffi deserves losing his family on the whim of western Government., who are backing the 'rebels' when they have no clue who these rebels actually are.who gave them right to invade libya.

This is just wrong, NATO is now no better than Gaddafi. Its obvious that this has nothing to do with protecting civilians or obeying the rule of law - take up Gaddafi's offer of a cease fire but all sides must stop at the same time - as he says if only one party has to stop its not a cease fire.

Quoting who gave dem d right:
can you imagine what would happen here if everyone in the England got shotguns and marched on parliament demanding the resignation of the 'royal' family (business) and the current government? The first thing you would see would be armed police and troops on the street and the 'rebels' from my town would be called criminals or terrorists and shot on sight!
You seem to be a sick person if you really think UK is the same like Libya? I can see if people like were the majority in this Earth, my brother the oppressed of the third will still be ruled by tyrants and self imposed poor church rats becoming KING of rats. You know what that means POVERTY, WAR, CIVIL WAR, UNDERVELOPMENT, ILLITRACY, CORRUPTION, OPPRESSION, TRIABALISM, DICTATORSHIP, IGNORANCE,EMBEZ ZLMENT, WEAPONS DUMP AREA, DISSAPPERANCE, MASS EXILED, LACK OF FREE SPEECH, NO PRESS FREEDOM, INCOMMUNICADO SOCIETY, HUNGER, JOBLESS, DRUGS, JAILINGS, INJUSTICE, POLICE BRUTALITY, BRAINLOST, CRIM

Hold your horses old boy......

There would never be no Libya-style uprising marching on Downing Street because you do not live in a police state like the Libyan people did for the last four decades, and the Royals have no political power, so people just tolerate them as a symbolic representation of a once glorious empire, you got it?

So now NATO have resorted to bombing children to win the illegal war in Libya? A bunch of 'criminals' got guns and attacked the internationally recognised government and we call them 'rebels', can you imagine what would happen here if everyone in the England got shotguns and marched on parliament demanding the resignation of the 'royal' family (business) and the current government? The first thing you would see would be armed police and troops on the street and the 'rebels' from my town would be called criminals or terrorists and shot on sight! Nato isnt protecting civilians, no civilians were being attacked in this strike except the grandchildren that were killed. The pilot that dropped the bomb should be ashamed and david cameron and sarkozy obama t should be tried for war crimes. I hope Gaddafi wins. I'm disgusted by their actions. What about Bahrain or Yemen then NATO?
