Nationwide AH1N1 vaccination campaign starts in Gambia

A week-long nationwide vaccination campaign against the AH1N1 influenza or swine flu was embarked upon Monday morning
by a team of health workers spread across the Gambia.The campaign plan is targeting 10% or 170,000 people in vulnerable groups among whom 120 health care workforce, pregnant women, diabetics and children aged 10 to 11.

Over the weekend, the WHO country representative Dr. Thomas Sukwa confirmed to journalists that they have 164,000 doses of the Tamaflu medicine for the week-long engagement.
Calling on journalists to find out more about the influenza and to disseminate the knowledge gained, Sukwa also explained that people had virtually no immunity to AH1N1.
He described the AH1N1 as a viral infection that mainly attacks the nose, throat, the bronchial and even the lungs.
It spreads from person to person through coughs or sneezing and hands thus the importance of washing hands frequently. The best way to curtail it is through vaccination, Sukwa advised.
