Nambia sees Gambia, Mauritania as soft targets
Friday, 09 April 2010 23:06
The early exit of Nambia in the second edition of the CHAN seems to have heighten worries about the chances of the Brave
Warriors in the qualifiers for the big party, CAN 2012 But despite this latest setback ,a defiant Brave Warriors mentor Tom Saintfiet is adamant Namibia still has what it takes to qualify for the 28th
edition of the biannual Confederation of African Football (CAF) Africa Cup of Nations to be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in 2012.The 37-year-old Belgian national has been the subject of verbal abuse by angry fans following a string of poor results that have seen Namibia making an early exit from the qualifiers of the 2nd edition of the CAF African Nations Championship (Chan) at the hands of continental lightweights Seychelles.
“People need to understand that the current crop of players plying their trade in the domestic league are just not up to the required level of international football. A good number of home-based footballers lack the ambition to play at international level and succeed,” said Saintfiet.
Saintfiet, who enjoys the full backing of the Namibian FA, remains confident about Namibia’s progress and believes he is the right man to steer the misfiring Warriors to their third appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations – come to 2012.
Namibia opens her assault in the 2012 Afcon qualifiers with an away tie against Gambia in September later this year, before hosting Mauritania in what most Nambian press says should be a routine three pointer.
"The Warriors are pitted in a relatively easy group consisting of Burkina Faso, Gambia and Mauritania with the winner guaranteed a final berth for the 2012 Afcon finals, while the three best placed nations from the 11 groups will also qualify for the continental showpiece", said another commentator.
