Maputo 2011: Gambian Cyclists Abscond or Fear To Go Home?
Thursday, 29 September 2011 01:03
(Gamsports) - Almost one week after the end of the All Africa Games in Mozambique, key Gambian cyclists have not return to Banjul, official sources confirmed to Gamsports.
Among those still absent is the country’s best known cyclist Elimmane Jammeh. No reason, have been advanced for their apparent decision to stay back and officials are now calling it as a case of absconding. But a source in Maputo told Gamsports that the cyclist have no intention of absconding but they are in fear of a possible arrest in Banjul once they return; “They have been informed that
because of an interview they granted to the BBC, in which they criticized state officials for chasing them out of their hotel rooms among other things, might not go down well with the authorities in Banjul,” said a source in Maputo. The cyclists, who were privately funded to attend the event, claimed they were discriminated against and that they are a victim of a dispute between the national Olympic committee which partly funded the Gambian team and the cycling federation boss, who paid for them to attend.
However, officials contacted by Gamsports in Banjul expressed surprise that the cyclist should fear of returning. ‘’I have no reason to believe that the cyclist would be harm if they come back just because they speak to the BBC,” assured a senior security official.
