Mansally hits two to sink DC
Sunday, 04 April 2010 23:52
Gambian Ken Mansally inspired his Revolution side to a stunning victory over DC United Saturday night.
Coming as a subsitute, Mansally started the sequence on the opening goal by holding the ball near the center circle, then finding Tierney on the left wing. Tierney ran to the end line and crossed, the ball deflecting off Kheli Dube and defender Dejan Jakovic, while Mansally waited to head
home.“I was sitting on the bench and I was saying nobody is testing the goalkeeper, we can get more shots on goal,’’ said Mansally, who joined the Revolution after playing for Gambia in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada in 2007. “So when I came in I tried from far away and the next one I got a goal. In practice I’ve been scoring like two or three, or four goals. I wanted to get a hat trick but I couldn’t. So, maybe next time, next home game.’’ Revolution, who play host to Toronto FC in their home opener Saturday, last scored twice in a 2-1 win over Seattle last September.
Sainey Nyassi, the other half of the Revolution’s Gambian connection, stayed in a defensive mode for most of the half, helping to contain United’s Christian Castillo, a Salvadoran national team midfielder who drew the loudest greeting from the 20,000-plus crowd. Nyassi threatened with a right-wing run in the 40th minute, leading to an off-balance Pat Phelan half-volley, which missed high.
“The one thing we lack is experience,’’ Nicol said. “And when you win games it helps confidence. I think we can get a lot better, that’s for sure. If we can keep winning while we’re learning, that’s even better. We’d love to do it the Barcelona way but not everybody can.’’
