Malaria still Gambia’s major health concern
Saturday, 30 April 2011 04:06
(Jollofnews) - Malaria remains the Gambia’s major health concern, despite decades of concerted efforts to eradicate
the disease. The disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality and account 40 percent of all hospital visits in the country. “As we celebrate World Malaria Day, we should take stock of our past achievements in the fight against malaria, and seek new ways of eradicating it from our society,” the Coordinator of AMMREN-Gambia Chapter, Pa Modou Faal, said in a statement.

As part of celebrations marking the World Malaria Day, the Chapter has organized an interactive session for journalists at the Center for Innovation Against Malaria in Kanifing on Wednesday. It was meant to equip journalists with information strategies and measures put in place to scale up the fight against the killer disease in the country.
AMMREN, a leading organization in the fight against this killer disease in Africa, marks malaria day in all its member countries. Mr. Faal stressed the importance of the day, saying it allows countries to learn from each other’s experiences.
Pa Modou Faal also acknowledged the support of AMMREN Secretary General Mrs. Charity Binka, and asked journalists to spread malaria message to grassroots levels.
Journalists also received briefings from Balla Kandeh and Umberto D’Alessandro, officials from National Malaria Control Programme and Medical Research Council, respectively. They spoke about the impact of malaria on the Gambia’s public health and the importance of raising awareness to combat the disease.
