Major airline banned from flying to Banjul

brusselsafricaplane800pxbannerJollofNews - Gambians who prefer flying to Dakar with Brussels Airlines will no longer be able to do so. This is because the authorities in Senegal have ordered the Belgium based airlines to suspend flights to Banjul and two other West African cities,Banjul_International_Airport_inside according to a report by the Pan-African news wire, PANA.
According to a source who spoke to news agency, the decision by the Senegalese authorities is like to have been influenced by the establishment of Senegal’s new air carrier, Senegal Airlines, which will not embark on its first flight to Banjul until Tuesday, January 25.
“This is a formal statement with immediate effect. We believe the decision has been taken to enable Senegal Airlines to recover this slot,” the source said, adding: “The problem is that the new company has not yet started its activities as we have a high demand for Banjul, Conakry and Freetown.”
According to the Source, Brussels Airlines can no longer ensure the transit of its passengers to the three African capitals from Dakar. They added, however, that the airline was exploring diplomatic channels to try to have the ban lifted.
“It seems that the measure cannot be waived by the Minister of Transport, Karim Wade. For now, our efforts have not yet been successful. But we hope to resume services to the three capitals,” the source said.
Brussels Airlines is one of 15 airlines connecting Gambia to the outside world, and it is one among a few of these that provides a reliable service. A permanent halt in service to Banjul is likely to hurt many Gambian travelers who enjoy using its flights.

I don't think that is up to Senegal to decide what airline should fly to Gambia or not. If Senegal wants the Gambian market they should earn it not restricting competitions.

Hope you can apply that in the oppressed oppostions parties in the gambia too

Just to be clear. Brussels will still fly from brussels - dakar - banjul but they will NOT pick up passengers that are only traveling from dakar - banjul or from banjul - dakar.

Maybe your king kong jammeh will be the best person to ask.

You have a point, 2fly.
However, despite my little knowledge onbusiness, I am inclined to feel that the market in Gambia is just not enough to make a good center for an airline. If you have flown out of Gambia via Banjul, you will see what I mean. The interval between flights is hours, because the number people that flight out of the country is very simple, and in fact a good number of that are expertiots. So it is a very boig problem that is facing Brussels, if the Senegalese do not revert their decision.

I am in essence saying the same thing. No doubt Banjul lacks the traffic needed to be a profitable hub for any airline for a myriad of factors but if Dakar is looking to obliterate the competition for their future endeavours;then they sure handed the underdeveloped aviation program in Banjul a chance to become a connecting city to the world for the west african region. okay..may be thats a stretch lol!

well! i don't wanna comment on the interest of both sides but i'll be glad to have Brusels air line directly to Banjul only rather than Dakar to Banjul and Banjul to Dakar.
Pasengers are also tired of longer hrs waiting to reach there destinations.

BrusselsDakarBa njul direct is a more profitable route than say a nonstop BrusselsBanjul for obvious reasons.
Am quite sure if Sn wants to use Banjul as their new west African hub civil aviation Banul would hasten to have that pass since that would mean more landings for bjl which dearly needs any revenue it can garner.

Well, The Gambia Doctor, Seikh, Aids curer and now Sickle Cells can take over.

Now we can see what Yahya Jammeh can do.

Why can't Brussels fly straight to Banjul and by pass Senegal.
