Mai Fatty’s Relatives Detained, Released
Wednesday, 09 March 2011 19:45
Foroyaa - Reports have it that a native of Nyakoi Kerewan, Wuli West District was arrested from his home and detained at Basse
Police Station at around 3 p.m. on Monday, 7 March 2011 for purportedly erecting a flag and pasting a photo and poster of the GMC party. The Gambia Moral Congress is a registered political party which is lead by Mai Fatty, a barrister who now lives in self exile.

When this reporter contacted the Commissioner of Police, Upper River Region, Ebrima Cham, he confirmed the arrest and detention of Mr Fatty. According to him, he was detained for the alleged offence that has been committed. But he added that during interrogation, Mr Fatty pointed out that it was not him but one of his sons (Mohammadu Fatty) who erected the flag and pasted the posters. He said further that Mohammadu was asked to report at Basse Police Station which he had already done; that he was subsequently detained and his father released.
According to relatives, Mohammadu was later released “upon the intervention of the Governor of URR, Mr Omar Khan” allegedly due to “his mental illness”.
When this reporter spoke to the released father, he indicated that his detention was a violation of his fundamental rights, while stressing that he had done nothing to warrant his arrest and detention.
This reporter also contacted Mr Lamin Jadama of the IEC regional office, but he declined to comment and referred him to the head office.
Efforts were also made to get the opinion of the Governor but he was not available as he had gone to a funeral.

This’ the reality of Gambia under a murderous coward taking advantage of the weapons he found to be TEMPORARILLY in-charge of; havocking terror into the minds of the ‘constitutional ly un-aware’ population; what has he to fear resent/critic IF he’s decent in intention & act??? Our debates & interactions’ pays dividend & WILL succeed sooner than most might assume. I can assure you all, that the hallucinating kingship campaign’s ‘nipped in the bud’ with latest political developments. Let’s keep the tempo tight a little; for a while; the culprit will succumb to the will of the masses who own Gambia.
Can anyone candidly say that this regime is serving the best interest of Gambians by arresting people?
These tactics employed by Jammeh, his gang members and sympathizers (all of whom are guilty by thought and/or deed) continue to terrorize the people from expressing their constitutional right to support any party they want. What if Mai Fatty's parents support him? If Jammeh was an opposition would his Zombie mother not support him? Would that warrant her arrest?
Yet, it seems that some do not think its time for this regime to leave. More and more Gambians are becoming frustrated with these acts and it is only a matter of time before things turn violent.
Lamin, let concentrate now on our African problem and find a way to put anyone accountable who occupy statehouse.
The Arabs have realised that, and we should not the last people on earth to realise that too. Charity begins at home!!!. He might in the beginning want to do good join a coup, but with time he put Gambians in a total fear and mute. It is wrong and not a scope or essence for any kind of human development in this modern age. You are right, that Gambian cultural norms and values have the best human right laws but that’s not in Jammeh nor the brutal rulers in Africa show to their people. It about Gambia and Africa to be like China and developing and not Yahya Jammeh. He has to respect Gambians rights and its resources since it there to provide eternal survival for its generations and not his own life and survival. A true developer will not even seek a fourth term as ruler deriving new talents and strategies for Gambia.
As long as we continue to protect individual interests we have a long way to go and violence will never solve it just as others are planning to immediate the Middle East. I have this statement to make, “LAST YEAR WAS A YEAR OF NATURAL DISATERS LIKE FLOODS BUT THIS YEAR WILL BE A MAN MADE DISATER IN THE NAME OF UPRISING. Libya is just an example. You are doing what is expected of you by making points than people who when you support they say you are a Jola. What does tribe have to do with the well-being of our country?
Thanks my brother I have great admiration for you despite most of the times we always disagree. Your problem with me is you don’t recognize credit when necessary and completely disagree. Jammeh was not a politician but a military officer from the Barracks who came to power with the ambition of development and knows little about political tolerance and respecting some of the international treaties. Is not all effort is Jammeh but our Gambian society is not violent but nurture peace that we have great intercultural relationship. This has helped a lot that no matter how much grievances we have against each other it’s always exchange of words but difficult to take action. You are one of the people that I believe you oppose in the interest of the country which if we have people like you, you may not get all but what matters is the majority. Personal attacks and tribal remarks will only make this forum stupid and foolish with no gain.
If we are so unfortunate as to allow this man to grow more comfy in that seat of power, more than he already is, then we are in for a lot more nasty antics in the future.
I do not get this at all?
The President has billboards and green flags all over the place. What next?
If the APRC become offical Chelsea "Blue" supporters...will they ban Man. Utd. "Red" supporters?
and then play amongst themselves?
I am pleased Mr Fatty's family are reported safe and well.
Mr Fatty's interview with Pa Nderry Mbai on Freedom Newspaper..was outstanding.
Should be worth tens of thousands of sympathy votes?
APRC..hang your heads in shame.
