Laurent Gbagbo Must Face Justice

Gbagbo_being_arrested(Jollofnews) - The President of Dakar-based African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO) has brushed aside granting amnesty to Laurent Gbagbo, the disgraced former Ivorian leader.
“Laurent Gbagbo must face justice,” Mr. Alioune Tine said, countering Kenyan Prime Minister’s calls that Mr. Gbagbo be granted amnesty.
The outspoken activist wondered why Raila Odinga does not understand the past lessons. “Is he preaching for his parish?” he asked. “We know that there were some people in his inner circle who allegedly carried out mass killings during the Kenyan post-electoral crisis,” he told JollofNews.Gbagbo_being_arrested
Mr. Tine supported President Alassane Ouattara’s resolve to investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity in Cote d’Ivoire. “There can be no reconciliation without justice.”  He said “national amnesty laws cannot protect those responsible for international crimes such as crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes or torture.”
He said reconciliation can be perceived as “insulting” in a continent where thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons continue to face gross human rights violations. Mr. Tine condemned the mass killing of 800 civilians in Ivory Coast’s western city of Douekoue last month. He said perpetrators of these unacceptable massacres should be brought to justice.
Mr. Gbagbo, who ruled the West African country for a decade, was captured by forces loyal to President Ouattarra after weeks of fierce fighting. He refused to relinquish, despite losing the November 2010 presidential elections.
