Journalists undergo training ahead of polls in Gambia
Saturday, 25 September 2010 20:51

The training, organized by the American Embassy in Banjul, is focusing attention on election coverage.
Fleeson, who has successfully trained journalists in various developing countries, said Friday the key to an effective covering of election was in planning the coverage.
Speaking via a live Television transmission from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, Fleeson, whose training manual for teaching investigative reporting in developing democracies has been translated into 18 languages, editors had a role to play, mostly in determining how big a story is and if so, should be able to get enough resources (reporters) in the field to get more facts.
She said the journalist should be able to go into the field to get the views of both the rich and the poor.
Another is â~the mechanism behind the message/story', saying the story should contain the views of politicians running for posts and those who are not contesting as well as the electorate.
This, she said, would help the electorate in making the right choice when voting . However, she noted that such stories should be approached in a way that will not endanger the life of the journalist.
'Let what you have be the truth,' she said.
