Jammeh vows to scale up the anti-narcotics crusade

JammehBy Abdoulie John
President Yahya Jammeh has vowed to push on with his anti-narcotics crusade and graft, which have become sporting activities in the country.
Jammeh’s pronouncement, made earlier on Thursday, while chairing a colorful ceremony in Banjul marking the 16th anniversary of the 22nd July military take-over, came barely 24 hours after the State filed a new conspiracy charge against 12 foreigners linked with the biggest cocaine seizure in the country.Jammeh
“There is no way that my government will tolerate drug and compromise on its trafficking in The Gambia,” Jammeh said, provoking quiet a bit of applause from among the massive crowd that had stormed the Arch 22 to celebrate “Freedom Day.”
Present at the Arch 22, a structure that symbolizes the ‘July 22nd Revolution’, were hundreds of his party supporters, government officials and a good number of local and foreign dignitaries.
Unveiling the linkage existing between drugs and corruption, the Gambian leader emphasized that narcotics trafficking is responsible for “massive and rampant corruption” in so many countries.
“If we allow drug in this country, let us forget about our religion, because it will become so violent that nobody will be safe in a mosque or church,” he warned.
With Gambia increasingly becoming identified as a drug hub for Latin American Cartels, President Yahya Jammeh promised to do everything possible to eradicate its proliferation in the country. The phenomenon, he said, poses a particular problem to the country’s stability and development.
And with Guinea Bissau increasingly falling into a failed State scenario, “The Smiling Coast”, as Gambia is fondly called, seems to be a salutary alternative for local drug barons and their Latin American Godfathers. The recent seizure of 2 tones of cocaine with a street value of $1 billion has put that into context.

Whoever in his/er normal sense will believe the nominal political statement to save his own backside? How does the drugs, never manufactured in Gambia, got there in first place? Yaya has been identified by Ensa Badjie & Sillahba Samateh to be the Chief cocaine-baron in country. This is not the first time that yaya’s government involves in cocaine peddling with the intercepted drug container addressed to Gambian Agric Ministry at Mauritanian port. Who’s he kidding apart from himself???
