Jammeh denies involvement in Deyda Hydara's murder
Friday, 18 March 2011 00:27
AFP – Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has denied his government was involved in the 2004 murder of prominent
journalist Deyda Hydara and the disappearance of another, Chief Ebrima Manneh, in July 2006."Let me make it very clear that my government has nothing to do with the death and disappearance of Chief Ebrima Manneh," Jammeh told a group of media chiefs and editors in the country, who met him Wednesday evening at State House in Banjul.

The meeting, which brought together Jammeh's cabinet including the small west African country's vice president and ministers for women's affairs and communications, as well as senior journalists, was aimed at fostering closer ties between the government and the media.
Hydara, the editor and co-founder of the independent newspaper The Point and one-time Gambia correspondent for Agence France-Presse (AFP), was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in his car on the outskirts of Banjul on December 16, 2004.
"There is no genuine reason why the government will kill Deyda Hydara. If I have good reasons to kill Deyda Hydara, I will take him to court and if convicted, I will follow the the court's decision without any regret," Jammeh told the gathering.
Jammeh also told journalists that he will not tolerate sensationalist journalism in the country. "I will also not sacrifice Gambia's peace and security at the altar of freedom of expression," he said.

If you are not responsible for all the deaths & disappearances during your reign, why don't your government commission full investigations, if necessary with international help,to unravel the truth. Surely, you owe this not only to The Gambian people, but to the families of the victims and to your own self and image.
Why is it so difficult for you to do this? What are you afraid of?
Please spare us this childish nonsense of 'sacrifing Gambia's peace'. Where on earth does freedom of expression sacrifice peace & stability?
On the contrary,it is the supression of these freedoms that threaten the peace & stability of a nation.
So if you want to be taken seriously about your innocence, autho rise a full investigation into all cases of mysterious deaths & disappearances & publish the findings.
Do it if you are clean or shut up.
MAY GOD SHOWER DEYDA´S FAMILY WITH HIS RICHEST BLESSING AND PROTECTION,GAMB IANS AND THE WORLD AT LARGE EXCEPT THE EVIL ONES AMONG THE HUMAN RACE.AMEEN
The things you do may just come back to haunt you.
Those arms you keep importing into our region might just fall into the wrong hands and then you could find you convoy wiped out by these same weapons. And you think all those countless police check-points would save you?
Hunters in Gambia can no longer buy shot gun catridges capable of killing wild pigs,(since over 10 years ago), only bird-shot pellet catridges are legally sold, so most hunters can only buy smuggled buck shot from Bissau. Also double-barrel guns that farmers used to buy are out of the question.
This guy would go to all lengths to thwart potential threats to his own security but would easily order the assassination of others. Things can never end well for this man, never!
I WISH WE COULD GO BACK TO BRITISH RULE SO AT LEAST THERE WILL BE PEACE AND SECURITY FOR OUR SOULS.
YOUR DAYS ARE NOW NUMBERED.REMEMBER WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN,REMEMBER U HAVE KIDS AND SOMEONE IN THE FUTURE WILL DO THE SAME TO YOUR KIDS LIKE U HAVE DONE TO OTHERS KIDS.SHORT LIVE YAYA JAMMEH,LONG LIVE THE GAMBIA AND LONG LIVE THE GAMBIAN PEOPLE.
Your silence to this prominent issue has caused an irrepable damage to your credibility. We can no longer believe a word you say after such a long. No!
Our stance is more firm today that your are responsible for Deyda´s assassination, the disappearance of Chief Ebrima Manneh, K.Kanyi, the killing of Marena and all others.
This is the fact.
