Jammeh Condemns Rumour Mongering
Monday, 08 August 2011 18:05
(Opinion) - Its widely said that behind every rumour lies a slice of truth, verily the very basic reason why good intelligent
agents waste no time to get to the root of any unfolding rumour. I am sure the Point like other media organisations did sourced their stories from very realisable circles and Jammeh is just acting to distance himself from a dismissal of a public official that must have gone wrong. For a government that has never been transparent to its citizenry, what is the urge for the sudden throw on light in Yankuba Colley's alleged dismissal. Surely the president have realised that Colley's exit now will be a political catastrophe to his re-election and thus took the opportunity to send a message to the entire civil servant that they are job secured least until end
November. One therefore must not be moved by Jammeh's utterance as they are clearly political, he will waste no time firing our hardworking civil service.Mr. President, Gambians if you may be reminded remain the most friendly and kind people on earth and see no reason why they will have bad intentions or wishes for one another. The mere reason why Gambians never let their promising ones work under your government is because having one serve under you is bad on a resume. Given that all your ministries and parastatals are a failure, it does no selling for an individual who has been a victim of your system of "hire and fire". The Gambian civil service deserve better; they need a free work environment where there are no constant threats of an "electric broom" raking them off from as brief as three days service, a work place where they have freedom to decision making, not dictated; one with freedom to social and or political affiliation, not the one party type. Should you find need to justify your dismissal of public officials, then why not try implementing a performance base management for all heads. Under such a system, total liberty to decision making will be given to say a minister or head of a parastatal for a contractual term where upon he will be gauge by means of point performance taking into considerations resources in place and economic conditions that may hinder realisation of such points. In this way, justice will be done where an official under performs in the most promising conditions.
Clearly Mr. President, you won't opt for such a system because the first failure will be you as minister for both energy and agriculture. Under your steering, Nawec barely could supply six hours of uninterrupted electricity to the populace in every five years. Near every presidential election you come up with a bogus electricity project that does little to change the lives of ordinary Gambians, the real motive of which is to cover up your failures in the energy sector so as the opposition do not have much to say about it. Since 1994, Gambians have been awaiting to see your promised city state that you boost will enjoy a well connected road infrastructure, clean portable water and an uninterrupted electricity supply. For a decade as minister of energy you've failed to deliver on this promise. So how on earth do you expect ordinary public officials to make any difference just in three days, must they perform miracles? At your speed of hire and fire, its virtually impossible even for the most experience to implement own programme of activity. Mr President its high time that you stop shuffling public officials like a game of chess, government is far too complicated than chess. Development of a nation must be sustainable hence the reason to map out development programmes looking into the medium and long term implications they might have on the nation. Therefore, there is no sense in hiring Lamin well before he familiarises with the one department, he is moved to another, how do you expect him to come up with his own development plan. If there is already a programme in place, won't you agree he needs time to acquaint himself with such programmes since he is not the architect of such a programme. These are basically the flaus you continue to make, giving you the believe that most public heads are not working hard.
Your reference to the vice president as an example of individuals you did not sack is baseless. Hardworking as the vice president maybe, she won't have survive your electric broom for long if she had not been a great political asset to you. She is also surviving because she has succumbed to your every dictates. So Mr. President until you stop playing with civil personnel as a game of chess, Gambians will continue to predict what will be your next record.
