Wednesday, 19 January 2011 17:03

Salehi who is in Senegal at the head of a politico-economic delegation met with Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade on Tuesday evening. During the meeting, the Iranian caretaker minister pointed to Senegal's key role in Africa, and underlined the importance of Tehran's ties with Dakar.
As regards prospects and plans for the two countries' future relations, Salehi said that the two sides are due to start new economic projects with a total value of $200mln.
He also reminded that Senegal is among the African countries that could acquire car production technology through Iran's assistance. Wade, for his part, said that the current trend of mutual cooperation is moving on an upward slope in the direction of the two countries' interests.
The Senegalese president once again supported Iran's right of access to the peaceful nuclear energy.
Iran has sought hard in the last few years to boost ties and cooperation with the African continent and establish a strong foothold in the African markets.
Tehran has prioritized promotion of its economic and political ties with the African states and the country is now considered as one of the African Union's strategic partners.
Earlier, Senegal's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Madicke Niang lauded the close ties between Iran and the West African state, and thanked Tehran's aid and assistance to the development of African infrastructures.
"We believe that Iran is a friend of Senegal, Africa and causes and ideals of the Black continent," Niang said in a meeting with visiting former Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in December.
