In Musa Saidykhan vs Gambia Gov’t

‘Torture’ victim’s doctor to testify in courtBy Yusupha Cham
The case involving the ‘torture’ of journalist Musa Saidykhan by agents of the Gambia’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA) is expected to resume, Tuesday April 27, in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
According to latest reports reaching our editorial desk, both Saidykhan and his doctor are expected to testify before the ECOWAS Community
Court of Justice. Formerly editor-in-chief of the banned Independent Newspaper in Gambia, Saidykhan, who now lives in exile in the United States, together with his Senegalese doctor are expected to provide the court with material evidence to substantiate allegations of torture meted out against him by the NIA, when he and many other perceived opponents of the government were in their custody.
The former Independent editor claims that while in detention he got tortured until he became unconscious. He has scars on several parts of his body, and, according to other reports, his right hand got broken in the course of his ordeal.
Like many opponents who face threat to their lives from the Gambian government, Saidykhan fled into neighboring Senegal immediate after his release, from where he received treatment. The Ghana based Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) initially undertook his case with the Community Court of ECOWAS in 2007, in demand for justice for the victim.
