Humra Condemns Dr. Janneh's Arrest
Friday, 10 June 2011 03:01
(JollofNews) - Sweden-based human rights organization has condemned in strongest terms the arrest and detention of Dr. Amadou Scattred
Janneh. The former minister of information whose arrest was reportedly linked to his membership of a civil society group, the Coalition for Change Gambia, had been detained at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency in Banjul. “We are writing to express our outrage and strongest condemnation over the illegal arrest and subsequent detention of Dr. Janneh,” Human Rights for All (HUMRA) said in a statement.

Since his arrest on June 7, Dr. Jammeh, the man with both Gambian and United States citizenship has been denied access to his family and lawyer. HUMRA said his arrest clearly symbolizes the Gambia government’s “continued reign of terror targeting innocent citizens.”
The rights body also raises concern that agents have arrested some Gambians purportedly linked to the said coalition.
“This is a total violations of the rights of these citizens,” argues HUMRA Coordinator, Yaya Dampha, adding that Gambians have the constitutional right to belong to such a group. He expressed his organization’s disgust about what he called “yet another attempt by Gambian security agents to intimidate citizens from exercising their political and civil rights” ahead of this year’s presidential and legislative polls.
HUMRA demands the “unconditional and immediate release of those arrested in connection with the coalition,” urging security forces to confine themselves within the ambits of law. “They should stop assault on freedom of expression, assembly and association of Gambians.” He said these are guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and our constitution, which makes them “non-negotiable.”
