HUMRA Condemns Attack On RADDHO Boss
Tuesday, 28 June 2011 14:22
It’s many years now Mr. Alioune Tine have been subjected to several harassment by the National Intelligence and Security Services offices in Dakar in the course of sessions of interrogation related to his activities for the defense of human rights. He has been arrested, interrogated and released many times.
We gathered that in 2006, Mr. Alioune Tine, received three different phone calls from an unknown person who only identify himself as Mr. X. This person urged Mr. Tine to cease his activities and “advised” him to “think a bit more about himself, his family and his children.
HUMRA-Human Rights for All condemned these senseless harassment, persecution and psychological aggression against Mr Alioune Tine, the head of the Senegalese-based RADDHO rights group and all the members of the Youths including Rappers who were arrested during the protest march.
On Thursday, Senegal’s ruling party changed the constitution to lower the percentage of votes a candidate needs to win an election and to create the office of vice president. The changes are being introduced just eight months ahead of the 2012 national elections, prompting Dr Alioune Tine and civil society leaders to deride the proposal as a “constitutional coup.”
We at HUMRA - are calling on the Senegalese government to make sure that it protect, secure and guarantee in all circumstances the physical and psychological well being of Mr. Alioune Tine, as well as put an end to all acts of harassment against him. Take immediate measures to provide effective and appropriate protection of Mr. Alioune Tine and the members of RADDHO. The government of Abdoulie Wadde must carry out its responsibility in guaranteeing total protection for human rights defenders, and further ensure that they do their works without restriction and fear of reprisal, as established in the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders as well as the resolutions of the Regional rights instruments signed and ratified by Senegal.
