Gun Battle at The Gambia- Cassamance Border

army_pro_bojang(Foroyaa) - Reliable information gathered by Fororyaa from Villagers in Bulubur and Allahkunda in Foni Jarrol District, has it that sporadic gun battle took place near their respective villages on the night of Monday 18 April.
The gun battle is said to have lasted for hours. The villagers appeared panic stricken as a result of the fierce gun battle within Cassamance that was so close to their villages.
According to the resident s of Bulubur and Kanilai, they were woken up by heavy gun fire between the hours of 1am to 2am, which lasted for hours. The villagers said the fighting continued till almost day break. They stated that they had a sleepless night and were scared due to the noise caused by the heavy weapons that were being fired by the warring factions. They indicated that their mud and thatch houses shook almost to the point of collapsing due to the sound of the heavy guns that were fired from different directions.army_pro_bojang
When asked where the fighting was taking place, they said it was within the Senegalese side of the border. They indicated that they could not verify who and who were involved in the fighting, but assumed that it was the MFDC with Senegalese forces. They said for the past couple of weeks, the MFDC had renewed and step up their activities within the area and were marauding the area with heavy arms and ammunitions.
They stated that personnel of the Gambia Armed Forces that were armed to the teeth were seen patrolling the area in the morning and night of the incident.
They stated that they have noticed an unusual movement of Gambian forces within their area after the Monday night incident with heavy guns. They added that Gambian Armed Forces personnel do patrol the area, but are not usually as armed as nowadays.
The residents of these two villages stated that they did not see any dead body or any wounded fighter within the area, but they were quick to add that the Gambian forces sealed the area off and restrained people from moving to the border area as they used to do before the Monday incident.
The Allahkunda residents, who are a stone throw from the border and less than a kilometer from Kanilai, said at first they thought the fighting was outside their village due to the loud noise caused by heavy explosion. They said they saw bright lightning from the guns that were fired by both sides. They asserted that they heard people giving orders. They said some bullets flew over their houses and landed within the Gambian territory.
A young man said he wanted to go across the border to see for himself who the combatants were, but was afraid to do so due to the indiscriminate nature of the firing. He said he saw bullet shells flying over and they brighten the sky like day light. He said he also saw troops of Gambian forces racing to and from the direction of the fighting to monitor the situation. He stated that the fighting was within Cassamance, but was very close to the Gambian side of the border.
The young man said they believe the fighting was between the Senegalese forces and MFDC. He added that he saw with his own eyes The Gambian forces armed to the teeth patrolling the border area as the battle raged. He noted that the entire villagers could not sleep and some had to abandon their houses to avoid bullets falling on them due to the heavy shells that were being fired, thus shaking their houses. He said many spent the night at the backyards of their houses watching the flying bullets from different directions.
The young men said during day break, Gambian forces were seen patrolling within their immediate surroundings in the Gambia ; adding that they were armed with heavy guns and were restricting the free movement of people within the area. He said at dawn, many were afraid to come out as early as they used to do because of the heavy presence of armed Gambian forces within the area.
However, this reporter endeavoured to cross the border into Casamance, but was advised not to do so by the villagers. He was told that for the past weeks, they saw unusual movements of armed rebels on the side of the Casamance who might be laying in ambush. The reporter while on the ground saw several Gambia soldiers in four wheel drive vehicles patrolling the border area. The immediate residents said they witnessed unusual movements of Gambia forces patrolling their satellite villages after the Monday incident.
When this reporter got in touch with the public relation officer of the Gambia Armed Forces he said he was not aware of the incident and promised to find out. PRO Lieutenant Omar Bojang added that since 2006 they have been patrolling the border to prevent incursion and any utilisation of The Gambia as a base.

I can see you dont have the answers and but the orders. This is not new since that is what yahya jammeh said about senegal too when he was catch red handed.I can see that for people like you every thing is tribalist inorder to cover evil deeds and this type of sympathy seeking is the same Yahya Jammeh used on those poor and helpless people in Kiang too not voting for him. But as for Senegal, they know better and many gambians are waking up too to this manipulative and yahya jammeh ways. Its high time you understand that, such nonsenses does not work on Gambians anymore. If you open the hearts of gambians, you will never find love for Yahya Jammeh except fear and desparation to survive. I have no doubt thats what in your heart too FOOTSOLDIER.You cannot bring development, peace, security, prosperity and harmony by using fear, blood, oppressions, and corruption to a society. You will sooner or later REALISE THIS!!!!FOOTSOL DIER and God bless Gambians

what jola has to do with, crossing our borders, look save your racial comments for god sake. if any senegales soldier kill one, only one gambian soldier because the rebels cross the border, they will pay heavy price for it. lets not play with fire, war between the two countries is not funny at all. stop politicising this issue. you can hate jammeh if you want, but people in gambia loves him very much. i am APRC supporter.

There you go again with your SICKNESS!

Maybe you can explain why Kanilai military protecting Jammeh are all his kinsmen and why MFDC [a JOla casamance separatist] moved from BIssau to Gambia in Foni. I know this place well. Why were they fighting in ala kunda just behind Yahya Jammeh residence.?Femi peters held a loud speaker and was put in jail, while MFDC with heavy arms just behind his residence fighting Sebegalese army in allakunda get away with it and no want knows or talked about it in Gambia or grts...tell me who is tribalist? Sooner or later Gambians will see who is a tribalist and hope its not too late and then U will say all Gambians are tribalists too. B honest now and say the truth it is very obvious who is tribalist.

@ Gibril,

You are right! It was disheartening to hear Darbo expressing his fear of Yaya Jammeh. I felt sad that this man doesn't even know how scared Yaya Jammeh is, of him and the entire opposition.

Too bad we are blessed (or cursed?) with the most chicken-hearted opposition leader in the person of Ousainou Darboe

On Freedom Radio i heard him whining that he will not lead people into the streets only to have their blood on his conscience. I guess such a leader would never send soldiers to war even when necessary. If the people are willing, then lead them or get the hell out of the way!

Look at what happened at the Buffer Zone recently when some residents of Abuko or Tabokoto attempted to assemble and march to Banjul for access to water and electricity. The panicked Minister of Interior and the IGP and Police Units quickly rushed to the scene. This shows how scared this regime is but Mr.Darboe is putting ABSOLUTELY no pressure in any form on the government to bring about political reforms in The Gambia, and as such, Jammeh feels he has a free hand to do whatever he wants, including interference in Cassamance using our resources.

U got that right brother, yes because they think Gambia is a Jola State rules by a Jola Mansa as they think of Bissau before destroying that country. This JOLA Maniac have a vision JOLAAA 20....and has hypnotised Gambians to be daft and silenced with kinsmen foot soldiers on his back and the majority unpatriotic and opportunist Gambians who will even sell their parents to this man and of course the scared ones talking about peace and love.

So Senegambia became not peaceful when Jammeh came to power? When did the Casamance crises start? When Jammeh came to power, right? So this is your reality?
You are so very right on this one:
"Some people would not recognize reality even if it was biting them on the ***"
I think this phase really describe you best. Casamance was fading away when Dakar and Guinea entered Bissau to oust MFDC with Manneh. Now Bissau is rebuilting it self and Manneh gone. They are now in Gambia and everyone in Gambia knows why except you. They are not welcome and should go to hell. They are criminals and drug smugglers like their wizard brother and they have poluted Bissau army with Drugs. Do you think these rebels will be based in kanilai just Behind Jammeh House AlaKunda with GUns and Mortars and missile if they were not his quest? How is your question relevant. Why do Gambia have such like U lots? Brainless

It’s evident who’s behind, PARTICULARLY in recent developments of illegal arms & ammunition-trots & hobs, within the sub-region, fanning flames, funding & sustaining especially the Cassamance Intifada? The Cassamance struggle started by father Djamaquin & others, to attract recognition & inclusion of southern Senegalese, formerly mainly sidelined, in general decision making of state; but it’s been lately turned into secession; to be annexed with Gambia?? This’ what Senegal Foreign Minister earlier stated that Wade’s out to seek remedy to; PERMANENTLY??? -We are yet to find out.
