Groups Want Jonathan to Put Pressure on The Gambia Over Rights Violations
Tuesday, 26 July 2011 03:46
(Lagos) - Amnesty International, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), Women
Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and Africa in Democracy and Good Governance (ADG) have urged President Goodluck Jonathan to put pressure on The Gambian authority to urgently address the persistent corruption and human rights violations in that country.
The groups made the call at a forum on the Global Day of Action on The Gambia in Lagos.
The Global Day of Action was held in many countries of the world on July 22, 2011.
The groups added their voices to the international call for urgent end to the ongoing and massive human rights violations by the government of President Yahya A.A Jammeh.
SERAP Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said: “President Jonathan needs to assert his authorities to ensure that Nigeria plays a key role in the global efforts to address the longstanding human rights challenges in Gambia.
“Nigeria has added responsibility, especially given the fact that President Jonathan is the Chair of the Authorities of the ECOWAS.”
Mumuni also said that, “it is precisely the failure of leadership presently being demonstrated by Nigeria and other key members of the AU that has resulted in the perpetration of human rights violations against the Gambian people and an entrenched culture of impunity of perpetrators. “

But may I respectfully remind you...of two outstanding issues from ECOWAS.
Firstly;
Though the Joint UN/ECOWAS panel exhonerated President Jammeh and The Gambian government over the murder of the ECOWAS travellers some 6 years ago.
The "Rogue elements" implicated said to be connected to security forces...has never progressed with arrests.
Surely...to implicate some one must be accompanied by evidence.
If those implicated are known...then they must be charged.
Secondly;
The ruling of the ECOWAS court is said not to have been completed for Chief Manneh and his Family.
So why has ECOWAS...Not acted to enforce its judgement?
Surely there are punitive measures that can be taken by ECOWAS...
All courts must have recourse to enforce there judgements..by all lawful means necessary.
don't you?
